Stop, Look, & Listen: What is Easy Streets?

Easy Streets is a campaign to inform the LSU community and campus visitors about in-progress street closures, which are meant to address the safety concerns of pedestrians and cyclists, enhance the timing of bus schedules, and encourage alternative methods of transportation to and from campus. The “Easy” in Easy Streets represents the ease students, faculty, and staff will have in getting to and from classes and appointments without the congestion of traffic and motorists speeding through crosswalks.

Sure, the changes that will accompany Easy Streets may force us all to make a few adjustments in certain habits and behaviors as roads are closed and traffic is redirected. But, once construction is complete, the safer and swifter access to inner areas of campus via walkways and bike paths will make it worth the brief inconvenience.

Read on to learn how Easy Streets affects you.

Just Around the Corner: What to Expect.

Beginning in the spring semester of 2007, students, staff, faculty, and visitors will notice several gated and manned booths erected at nine intersections in order to restrict traffic inside the campus core. Campus buses, staff, and faculty B and C permits, as well as other authorized vehicles will be allowed passage on these streets, but all other vehicles will be restricted between the hours of 7 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.

After the aforementioned hours and on weekends, traffic will be allowed to park on and travel these streets, but all vehicles must have a valid parking permit displayed both day and night. These parking permits will help to ensure campus safety in that everyone using vehicles on campus has been granted access through the proper channels.

Those allowed access to restricted streets will be given a gate access device to affix to their dashboard. This device will activate the gate as a vehicle drives up.

The following streets will have restricted access during the spring semester of 2007 and will be visibly marked as Easy Streets: Cypress Drive (between North PMAC Lot and Dalrymple Drive), Tower Drive (between Raphael Semmes and Highland Road), Fieldhouse Drive, South Campus Drive (between Highland and South Stadium Roads), CEBA Lane, South Stadium Road (between West Stadium Drive and Highland Road), North Stadium Road (between West Stadium Drive and Fieldhouse Drive), and Dalrymple Drive between Infirmary Road and Cypress Drive. Additionally, Infirmary Road will become a one-way street Northbound (going toward Chimes Street.)

Below is a detailed map of all restricted streets and alternate routes:

Walk or Don’t Walk: How Do These Changes Affect Us?

Students
Easy Streets will greatly enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety for students traversing internal sections of campus as well as improve the timing of bus schedules on campus streets. First and foremost, it should be noted that NO STUDENT PARKING WILL BE DISPLACED BY THIS PLAN. All Easy Streets will do is require that alternate streets outside of the restricted area be used to access student parking lots.

Students taking night classes (after 4:30 p.m.) WILL be able to park in the restricted areas. However, all vehicles must have a valid parking permit displayed both day and night.

Employees (Faculty and Staff)
Easy Streets should ease traffic and parking availability on campus. THIS WILL NOT AFFECT EMPLOYEE PARKING. Those with B (Red Zone) tags will still park in B areas and those with C (Yellow Zone) tags will still access C lots as before. Near the time of implementation, gate access devices will be distributed to all of those with B and C parking permits.

Visitors
Visitors to campus may obtain temporary permits at no cost in the Office of Parking, Traffic & Transportation (PT&T) or the LSU Visitor Center. Metered spaces throughout the campus can be utilized by visitors who have obtained temporary visitor permits, have them displayed, and are willing to pay the parking meter.

Visitor Parking Map

Visitors will not be granted access to core campus (Easy) streets unless the PT&T is notified ahead of time about their expected arrival to campus.

LSU employees are asked to contact PT&T in the instance that they have an important visitor or visitors coming to campus. Please notify PT&T two days in advance via e-mail at parking@lsu.edu or fax at 225-578-5588. Guests will be granted access at one of four manned booths. These booths will be located at the intersections of Dalrymple and Infirmary Road, South Stadium Road and Highland Road, South Stadium Road and West Stadium Drive, and North Stadium Road and West Stadium Drive.

Whoa! Hit the Brakes: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

I have a medical condition that requires nearby parking. What will I do?
PT&T will continue to address medical necessity access to the restricted areas on an individual basis as determined by a physician.

What if I drive a different car?
The access device as well as the permit can be transferred to the alternate vehicle. Additionally, there will be four manned booths as well as five unmanned entrances. If there is an instance where you don’t have your gate access device or for some reason it does not work at one of the unmanned entrances, the manned entrances should be used. Just pull up and present your parking permit and ID to the attendant.

What about motorcycle and scooter drivers?
Motorcycle and scooter drivers will not receive a gate access device but they will be directed to drive around the end of the gate arm and park in the designated motorcycle areas.

What about contractors, delivery services, etc.? How do they get in?
Those companies should contact PT&T. Most currently pay for access, but those who do not, need to make arrangements with PT&T. If departments have a special circumstance, they should also contact PT&T in advance.

What about emergency vehicles?
All first responders to LSU campus emergencies will receive access tags.

What if I need to park near a building to drop off a class project?
Permission can be given for short periods of time to allow students, faculty, and staff into areas to drop off or pick up large items. But you will need to get a loading permit in advance from either the LSU Visitor Center or PT&T.

Don’t take the chance that you won’t be parked long enough to need a loading permit. The few minutes spent getting the permit are better than the ticket or towing expense that you may incur by not getting a permit.

Right of Way: Alternate Transportation To and From Campus

Buses
Bus routes will remain the same despite restrictions to core campus streets. With fewer vehicles on campus, LSU anticipates that buses will be able to remain on schedule instead of being held up in traffic at high congestion times.

Buses are a convenient way to travel across campus. With routes reaching all areas of campus and areas nearby, traveling by bus allows you to leave your car at home and burn less gas.

There is a 21-bus transit system funded by student fees. It operates on campus from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for full service and two night routes that run from 5:30 p.m. to Midnight (3 a.m. Thurs-Sat for Night Route A). Most routes provide service from 6 to 11 minutes apart and serve off campus apartments in Tigerland, Highland Road, Burbank Drive, Nicholson Drive, Aster Street, and East State Street, as well as commuter lots and residence areas on campus.

Bicycle and Pedestrian Routes
In recent years the University in conjunction with the city has created several miles of pedestrian/bike paths surrounding the campus.
