 | History of LSU PD
The LSU Police Department traces its lineage back to 1938 when Charles R. Anderson was hired as a night watchman. On June 17, 1942, Mr Anderson was appointed the Chief Watchman and continued to serve as Chief until retirement in July 1973. During Chief Anderson's tenure, the Louisiana legislature, in 1968, granted police officer status to University Security Officers. The official name of the Department was changed to Louisiana State University Police.

During its sixty-one years of service, the operations and priorities of the department have kept pace with the growth of the University and the city of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
In 1988, the Police Department, the Occupational and Environmental Safety Office, the Office of Parking, Traffic and Transportation and the Office of Risk Management were united under the Office of Public Safety. Each Department is located in the Public Safety Building, located on South Stadium Road. The building opened in October, 1995.
Today, the Police Department serves a population base of approximately 35,000 people. This population base places the University in the Top 15 of "cities" within the State of Louisiana. Facing the challenges of providing a full-time law enforcement service to its constituents, the LSU Police Department continues to faithfully discharge the duties and responsibilities given to it by State law. All police personnel are full-time, commissioned University Police Officers, receiving their authority from Louisiana Revised Statutes 17:1805 |
