LSU Wintersession 2009 to Offer Unique Courses
Poetic Foundations of Hip-Hop, Cajun French Culture and Sports Marketing Among Courses Offered

10/05/2009 03:39 PM
As the fall semester concludes and the university retreats for the holidays, some students have no intention of creating a void between the fall and spring. LSU’s Wintersession 2009 will begin Dec. 14 with a variety of course offerings ranging from undergraduate to graduate level.

Each intersession (winter, spring and summer) has unique courses that may or may not be available during Intersessions of other seasons. Some courses, often electives, are only available during Intersession. Professors have the option to offer a course and submit it to their respective college for approval.
Lynn Evans, program manager for Extended Learning, said Wintersession offers many intriguing topics aside from the general study courses.

“We do try to get some interesting courses to make the session fun for students,” she said. “There is a French class that looks at Cajun French culture. There is also a finance course, principles of real estate, which is one of the courses people can use to get their real estate certification. So even if you are not a finance major, this is a course that you can take if you want a certification.”

Sue Weinstein, assistant professor of English, will be teaching a course that explores the poetic foundations of hip-hop.

“This class is a way to hook students in because I am drawing on something they are already interested in,” Weinstein said. “Elements from the Harlem Renaissance, which may feel old to students, are still very much alive, and we can see pretty clearly the way they come out in rap lyrics today. This happens all the time in literature, when people reference previous artistic movements and artists. The fact that this is happening inside of hip-hop is surprising to a lot of people.”

Other courses include the psychology of coaching, sports marketing, a study of the American presidency and sex roles in contemporary society.

To see a complete listing of Wintersession courses, visit the schedule booklet at the Office of the University Registrar’s homepage, www.lsu.edu/registrar. Course offerings are updated weekly until mid-November. Students are encouraged to check back regularly if they do not see what they are initially looking for.

Students are advised to register early to ensure the best selection of courses available. Registration occurs similar to other semesters using the PAWS account. Those enrolling can schedule four credit hours and up to six credit hours with approval from their dean’s office.

Wintersession begins Dec. 14-23 and will resume Jan. 4-6. Classes are held Monday through Saturday on the LSU campus. Each three credit hour course will meet for 3.5 hours with two 10-minute breaks.
