Two New Intersessions At LSU Answer Student Appeals for More Credit Opportunities

12/05/2006 07:53 AM
Responding to the academic needs of LSU students, LSU Continuing Education’s Extended Learning program is offering the first ever winter and summer intersessions – compressed terms held during semester breaks. Combined with the previously offered spring intersession, regularly admitted LSU students now have additional opportunities to take required classes and make faster progress toward graduation. Almost 900 students have already enrolled in Wintersession classes, which will be held Dec. 19-23 and Jan. 2-9. Summer intersession will be held Aug. 6-18.

“We worked with departments and faculty to bring high-demand classes to the new intersession terms,” said Joanne McMullen, director of Extended Learning. “Our hope is that students will take advantage of these new compressed terms and enroll in classes that can bring them closer to graduation.”

Regularly admitted LSU students in good standing with the university are eligible to register for any of the intersession terms using PAWS, LSU’s student communication system. Each three-credit-hour lecture class will be held Monday through Saturday for three-and-a-half hours each day.

“There was great cooperation at LSU to make the new intersession terms happen and happen quickly,” said McMullen. “Student Government, Academic Affairs, the Registrar’s Office, Enrollment Services, IT Services, Residential Life, academic departments, and LSU faculty and staff all worked together to make our new winter and summer intersession terms a reality.”

“LSU Student Government believes it is important that our students be given every opportunity to take the classes they need to graduate in a timely and efficient manner,” said Chris Odinet, LSU student body president. “We believe this new Wintersession will greatly enable our students to do just that, and we thank the university and Continuing Education in particular for their commitment to moving forward with this initiative.”

More than 40 classes are offered during the upcoming Wintersession. Specific course offerings and fee schedules are available online at www.extncredit.lsu.edu/intersessions.asp.
