| LSU Continuing Education struck gold in the 2008 University Continuing Education Association, or UCEA, Marketing and Publications Awards competition. LSU’s program was honored with a Gold Award in the “Most Improved” category for the Lagniappe Studies Course Bulletin, recognizing the best marketing practices and promotional pieces in the field of continuing education. Founded within LSU Continuing Education in 1996, Lagniappe Studies Unlimited is a member-directed, lifelong learning organization for persons 50 years and older. Last year, LSU Continuing Education was awarded a $100,000 grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation to establish the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, or OLLI, at LSU, the first and only institute in Louisiana. The Lagniappe Studies Unlimited course bulletin is produced twice a year and distributed to current members. It is also handed out to prospective members at the “Coffee and Lagniappe” events that take place between program periods. Using outside resources funded by the OLLI grant, the marketing materials were upgraded to support the growth goals of the program. Color photos of age-appropriate models were used to add interest and increase pass-along value, since the group attracts new members largely through word-of-mouth. “Thanks to the OLLI grant, we’re able to upgrade marketing materials without increasing program costs,” said Doug Weimer, executive director of continuing education. “This is a win-win for everyone involved.” “The larger copy size and open layout will help readers navigate quickly and easily through the information,” said Robert Bradley, the manager of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at LSU. “In addition, the materials have helped attract new members and prompted the establishment of an OLLI learning program in St. Francisville called Lagniappe in the Felicianas.” The 2008 award winners were recognized and celebrated at the association’s annual conference in New Orleans at a luncheon sponsored by UCEA’s Marketing and Publications Community of Practice. All award-winning entries were displayed in the Exhibit Hall at the conference and featured on a CD-ROM. - 30 - |
