03/09/2005 02:07 PM
Award-winning films from Hong Kong, Colombia, Germany and Cuba will headline the LSU Union Program Council International Committee’s upcoming International Film Festival. All films will be screened at 7:30 p.m. in the Union Colonnade Theater and are free and open to the public. The festival will run from Thursday, March 10 through Thursday, April 14.

The annual festival begins this year on Thursday, March 10, with the showing of “Hero.” The widely acclaimed film from Hong Kong was nominated for a 2003 Academy Award and a Golden Globe for best foreign language film. Starring Jet Li, the film tells the story of one man in ancient China who defeated three assassins attempting to kill a powerful Chinese warlord. “Hero” is in Mandarin Chinese with English subtitles and is rated PG-13.

The festival continues on Thursday, March 17, with the showing of the Colombian film “Maria Full of Grace.” Catalina Sandino Moreno was nominated for a 2005 Academy Award for her performance as Maria Alvarez, a 17-year-old Colombian girl whose life changes dramatically when she finds herself in a fight for her own survival after accepting a job as an international drug “mule.” “Maria Full of Grace” is in Spanish with English subtitles and is rated R.

“Run Lola Run,” the third film of the festival, will be screened on Thursday, March 31. It explores the effects of fate and “what if’s” on the lives of Lola and her boyfriend, Manni, whose life is endangered when he loses a substantial amount of money he was smuggling. The film won a 1999 Audience Award for World Cinema at the Sundance Film Festival. “Run Lola Run” is in German with English subtitles and is rated R.

The festival concludes on Thursday, April 14, with “Buena Vista Social Club,” a documentary chronicling the recording of a Grammy-winning CD of the same name. American guitarist Ry Cooder went to Havana to reunite a group of legendary Cuban musicians for the project; the documentary tells the musicians’ stories and features footage of concerts in Amsterdam and Carnegie Hall. “Buena Vista Social Club” is in English and is rated G.
