Winners Announced From 2009 Region VII Louisiana Science and Engineering Fair

03/26/2009 01:50 PM
BATON ROUGE – High school and middle school students from around the area gathered Friday, March 13, to compete in the Region VII Louisiana Science and Engineering Fair held at LSU.

More than 400 students in grades 6-12 from 35 schools participated in this year’s fair and competed for scholarships, savings bonds and other awards. Students with first, second and third place finishes in their categories were also invited to compete at the Louisiana State Science and Engineering Fair to be held next month.

Overall winners in the junior division – 6th through 8th grade – were Michael Smith and Stephenie Wang. Smith, of Boyet Junior High School in Slidell, took first place with his project, “Is Carbon Dioxide Really a Greenhouse Gas?” while Wang, of Glasgow Middle School in Baton Rouge, placed second with her project, “Comparison of UVA, UVB, and Visible Light Transmittance.”

Overall winners in the senior division – 9th through 12th grade – were Darren Jindal and Melissa McDowell. Jindal, of Baton Rouge Magnet High School, won first prize with his project, “Phonocardiography: A Novel Approach to Cardiac Auscultation.” McDowell, of St. Joseph’s Academy in Baton Rouge, placed second with her project, “Differentiation of Bovine Adipose Derived Adult Stem Cells.”

Baton Rouge Magnet High School won the top school award with several of its students placing in their categories and earning special awards.

The Region VII Louisiana Science and Engineering Fair was hosted by LSU Continuing Education. Region VII consists of students from parishes surrounding Baton Rouge.

The fair was held in LSU’s Carl Maddox Field House and judged by LSU faculty members and experts from the Baton Rouge community, who interviewed the students and reviewed their projects. Judging was conducted in 16 categories for each division, plus a team category. The event ended with an award ceremony honoring the winners.

“The Science and Engineering Fair programs are part of LSU’s service to the state of Louisiana,” said Douglas Weimer, executive director of LSU Continuing Education. “By coordinating these events, Continuing Education is supporting the university’s effort to attract the best and brightest students.”

The Louisiana State Science and Engineering Fair will be held April 19-20 at LSU. The state fair includes participants from all over the state and winners from regional fairs can compete in the Louisiana statewide fair. Winners of the statewide fair can compete in the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair, held in Reno, Nev., in May.
