LSU organizations host World AIDS Day events

11/23/2004 04:22 PM
A three-day series of events by several LSU and Baton Rouge service organizations is planned to publicize the upcoming Dec. 1, World AIDS Day.

The events include free “No Stick” HIV testing, an AIDS vigil and a public viewing of a portion of the NAMES Quilt – the memorial quilt that has approximately 46,000 panels and nearly 83,000 names of victims of AIDS.

Commemorative events begin on Monday, Nov. 29, with a publicity outreach campaign in front of the LSU Union. Volunteers will be handing out the red AIDS awareness ribbons, providing information and promoting World AIDS Day participation.

Four blocks of the NAMES AIDS Memorial Quilt will be on public display Nov. 29 and 30, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the LSU Union Ballroom. Since the quilt’s inception in 1987, more than 15.2 million people have viewed it.

An LSU Prevention Panel display painted by LSU students will coincide with the viewing of the quilt.

The “No-Stick” HIV testing will take place on the LSU campus in the Union Vieux Carre and Red River Rooms from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The oral test, sponsored by Family Service of Greater Baton Rouge, is free and painless and the results will be available within two weeks. An HIV Intervention Panel Discussion that focuses on HIV in Baton Rouge will be held in the LSU Union’s Atchafalaya Room from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Guest panelists include Eugene Collins, Education and Prevention Coordinator from the Baton Rouge AIDS Society; Tyson Jackson, Baton Rouge community member; Kathy Saichuck, LSU Wellness Education Coordinator; and LSU student Cynthia Tate, a senior psychology major and student worker in the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

The series will close with an AIDS vigil in the LSU Greek Amphitheater at 6:00 p.m. The vigil will include student and staff speeches, performances and a candle lighting. The events are designed to promote AIDS awareness, prevention strategies and encourage participation in the upcoming World AIDS Day.

The World AIDS Day Planning Committee is composed of representatives from the following LSU departments, listed alphabetically: the African American Cultural Center, Disability Services, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, Residential Life, Union Programs, Wellness Education and the Women’s Center. Various student organizations also contributed to planning efforts.
