| LSU Continuing Education’s Paralegal Studies program is celebrating 25 years of educating and placing professional paralegals. The Baton Rouge Paralegal Association and LSU paralegal graduates are also observing Sept. 16-22 as Paralegal Week to recognize these professionals for their valuable contributions to both the legal community and the public. Since its inception in 1982, more than 1,300 students have earned a Certificate of Paralegal Studies through the LSU Paralegal Studies Program. The only college level, non-credit certificate paralegal program in Louisiana approved by the American Bar Association, the program attracts a variety of participants including undergraduates seeking entry into a growing professional field, and adults interested in changing careers or returning to the job market. Program instructors are experienced lawyers or paralegals with extensive experience in the classroom and working with legal assistants. The program’s coordinator also assists in placing graduates in jobs – both immediately following the program and throughout their career in the field. According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s job outlook, the number of paralegal jobs is projected to increase by 33 percent through this decade. The role of paralegals in private, corporate and government law offices has evolved and expanded since the concept of a legal assistant originated in the 1960s. Today, paralegals play an important role in the delivery of legal services and are quickly becoming an integral part of any legal team. Responsibilities may include factual research, document analysis, citation checking, investigation and legal research. The paralegal may also aid the attorney in drafting pleadings, conducting interrogatories and discovery, interviewing clients, administering trusts and estates, assisting with real estate transactions, and drafting certificates and corporate documents needed by state law to form various business entities. Paralegals can assist in many client-related matters that do not require a law degree. For more information about LSU Continuing Education visit www.outreach.lsu.edu or call (225) 578-6325. -30- |
