LSU environmental chemist Barry Dellinger has been recognized by the American Chemical Society, or ACS, with a $30,000 grant from the Astellas USA Foundation, awarded to chemists whose work contributes significantly to improvements in public health.

Dellinger is a noted authority on the environmental and health effects of combustion. His research focuses on the formation of toxic combustion by-products, incineration of hazardous materials, combustion-generated nanoparticles and environmentally persistent free radicals.

Outgrowths of Dellinger’s work include the development of a zone model to assess pollutant formation in combustion systems and reaction kinetic models to explain the formation of dioxins and other combustion-generated pollutants. He is credited with the recognition that all combustion processes may form the same types of environmentally persistent free radicals attributed to cigarette smoke. His work is the basis of federal regulations regarding the burning of toxic wastes. He has served on the Environmental Protection Agency’s Science Advisory Board and provides frequent input on current environmental concerns. Dellinger’s data are also used by industry to streamline production and waste-disposal systems, reducing their cost and environmental impact.

According to Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives and Boyd Professor of Analytical & Environmental Chemistry Isiah Warner, “Professor Dellinger’s work has always struck a balance between environmental warnings and solutions. Although his work is the basis of EPA regulations and used in industry, it is also quoted by environmental organizations to espouse the dangers of lack of vigilance.”

Dellinger is a designated professor of chemistry and Patrick F. Taylor Chair for the Environmental Impact of Hazardous Waste, and also directs the LSU InterCollege Environmental Cooperative.

The three recipients of this year’s inaugural Astellas Award will speak at a presidential symposium during the 2008 Fall National Meeting of the ACS. The Congressionally chartered, non-profit ACS is the world’s largest scientific society, representing more than 160,000 professionals in all fields of chemistry and related sciences.
