| BATON ROUGE – LSU Associate Professor of Communications Studies Michael S. Bowman is the 2008 recipient of the Lila A. Heston Award for Outstanding Scholarship in Interpretation and Performance Studies. “When I found out I had been selected for this award I was very excited,” said Bowman. “It is very flattering to have your work recognized by your peers.” The Lila A. Heston Award for Outstanding Scholarship in Interpretation and Performance Studies was created to honor those individuals who research and publish essays about interpretation and performance studies. The award is being presented to Bowman at the Annual Convention of the National Communication Association, or NCA, the oldest and largest association dedicated to the communication discipline. This year’s convention is being held at in San Diego Nov. 21-24 and is bringing together more than 5,500 communication scholars and professionals to help further the discipline. Bowman’s publications, alongside his creative work, have worked together to productively challenge and expand theories and methods of cultural and performance criticism and performance composition. By combining rigorous and challenging scholarship with nuanced and engaging creative work, Bowman has modeled scholarly and creative excellence throughout his career. His essays and performances advance the understandings of tourism, staging narrative and mystoriography. In addition, his recent editorship of Text and Performance Quarterly resulted in eclectic, bold and strikingly original offerings. As noted by one of his nominators, Bowman “did what great editors do – he gave the journal back to NCA even better than it was when he started his term . . . For his gentle but incisive scholarship, for the esprit de corps of his research, and for his generous and wise aid in making others’ work better.” About National Communication Association Founded in 1914, NCA is the oldest and largest national organization promoting effective and ethical communication. The association supports the communication research, teaching, public service and practice of a diverse community of scholars, educators, administrators, students, practitioners and publics. NCA is a non-profit organization of more than 7,700 members who work and reside in every state and more than 20 foreign countries. NCA sponsors an annual convention, conferences, publishes academic journals and Web magazine, Communication Currents. For more information, visit www.natcom.org. -30- |
