| BATON ROUGE – LSU researcher and internationally respected paleotempestologist Kam-biu Liu is taking hurricanes out of the Gulf and into the classroom in a new course called “OCS 3200: Hurricanes & Typhoons.” The class is offered as part of the university’s new Coastal Environmental Science undergraduate degree program through the School of the Coast & Environment. “Most people think of hurricanes as only a weather phenomenon and expect it to be taught in a climatology or meteorology program,” said Liu, George William Barineau III Professor in LSU’s Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences. “But my course is based on a different approach because it cuts across different disciplines.” Liu’s class will look at the multi-faceted nature of hurricanes and typhoons, including:
“Tropical cyclones are a global phenomenon that occurs not only in the Atlantic basin but also in the Pacific and Indian Oceans,” said Liu. “My course will use examples from not only hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean but those in the Eastern North Pacific and typhoons in the Western North Pacific as well. By offering this new course, I hope to send the message that LSU is not only a leader in hurricane-related research, but is committed to becoming a leader in hurricane-related education, as well.” Students are encouraged to register via PAWS while spaces are still available.
