| BATON ROUGE – LSU Boyd Professor and Dr. Mary Lou Applewhite Distinguished Professor of Biological Sciences Mark Batzer has been named editor-in-chief of “Gene: An International Journal of Functional and Evolutionary Genomics,” one of the most prestigious and widely respected scientific journals in the field of genetic research. More than 5,000 institutions – 95 percent of institutions worldwide – currently subscribe to the journal. Batzer takes over from Giorgio Bernardi, who served as editor-in-chief for 13 years and, together with the journal’s publisher, hand-picked Batzer to be his successor due to his international reputation for expertise in the field of comparative genomics. Batzer’s duties as editor-in-chief include selecting manuscripts and identifying appropriate associate editors to conduct external peer reviews of potential articles, guiding the journal’s focus, recruiting manuscript submissions from authors, picking topics for inclusion in “Gene” and developing special thematic issues from current hot-button issues within the field. “This is an exciting opportunity for me to mold a journal that I’ve contributed to for years and also promote different aspects of science that need the attention of the publication’s readership,” said Batzer.
