CAMD Opens its Doors for “Day of Discovery”
Annual open house to be held Saturday, May 2, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

04/29/2009 04:52 PM
BATON ROUGE – LSU’s J. Bennett Johnston Sr. Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices, or CAMD, will host its 10th annual open house on Saturday, May 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Exhibits will include several demonstrations geared specifically toward children, including a hair-raising high-voltage experience guaranteed to make your hair stand on end, and a showcase highlighting the wonders of vacuum science. Kids will also have the opportunity to learn how things operate on the dark side of the moon by observing a liquid nitrogen experiment and can take part in several other interactive displays.

CAMD is a high-tech synchrotron research center that provides equipment, expertise and infrastructure for research and development in the area of microstructures and microdevices. As the only source of synchrotron radiation in the South, it is housed in a 45,000-square-foot building located on a 15-acre site approximately five miles from the LSU campus. At the heart of CAMD is a 1.3 billion electron volt synchrotron storage ring. Current investigations at the facility include both basic research in the areas of atomic and molecular structure and condensed-matter phenomena and applied research in the field of microdevice fabrication.

Additionally, X-ray spectroscopy and microscopy are being used at CAMD to provide powerful analytic tools utilized by industrial researchers as well as environmental and materials scientists from LSU and around the country. LSU students have the opportunity to work and study at CAMD, and can take advantage of the benefits of working with cutting-edge technology and some of the most distinguished researchers active in the field today.
