LSU Student and Professor Selected by HHMI EXROP Program
Collin Miller and Isiah Warner to participate in highly selective, nationwide mentoring program

BATON ROUGE – LSU undergraduate student Collin Miller and Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives Isiah Warner have both been selected to participate in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Exceptional Research Opportunities Program, or HHMI EXROP.

The EXROP program is a highly selective nationwide program pairing exceptional undergraduate students with HHMI researchers for an invaluable and in-depth summer research experience.

Miller, a sophomore in biological sciences, is one of only 63 students selected to participate in the program. He will spend his summer working in the lab of Geraldine Seydoux at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md.

“I think my LSU experience as a whole has prepared me for this tremendous opportunity. My science classes have taught me the things I need to know to be successful, and my research experience working with John C. Larkin has taught or introduced me to many of the skills I will use during my EXROP experience,” said Miller. “Also, my other classes and my time at LSU have made me better at working with others, thriving in new and unfamiliar environments and setting goals with the dedication to follow through with them. Every aspect of my experience at LSU will be helpful in making my EXROP experience a successful one, and I am definitely looking forward to it.”

Miller was nominated by both Warner and Dean of LSU’s College of Basic Sciences Kevin Carman for this honor.

“The EXROP program is designed to propel the research careers of an extremely select few undergraduates in the United States,” said Carman. “Dr. Warner and I felt that Collin was an excellent fit for the program as he has excelled in every aspect of his LSU experience. I would also add that Collin has distinguished himself in spite of some significant personal challenges. He is a truly remarkable young man, and I am proud to know him. I have no doubt that he will go far.”

Warner, whose additional titles include Boyd Professor, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor and Philip W. West Chair in Air Quality/Environmental Analytical Chemistry, is one of only 59 scientists selected to participate and will host a student from Carleton College.

“I am excited about working with my second EXROP student, Noe Hernandez,” said Warner. “Noe is a physics major from Carleton College. Noe and I have already talked, and we are both excited about this summer.”
