LSU Continuing Education and OSHA Partner to Provide Outreach Programs for Oil and Gas Industries

09/17/2009 02:10 PM
BATON ROUGE – LSU Continuing Education and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, have formed an agreement to provide various educational and outreach programs for professionals in the oil and gas industry.

LSU becomes the only higher education institution in Louisiana to have an agreement with OSHA through its OSHA Alliance Program.

Through the alliance program, OSHA will provide LSU Continuing Education with information and training resources to help protect employees’ health and safety, particularly for oil and gas industry workers in the Louisiana Gulf Coast region.

“The partnership between LSU and OSHA offers further educational opportunities to workers in an industry that is essential to the economic growth of Louisiana,” said Douglas Weimer, executive director of LSU Continuing Education. “LSU Continuing Education is also committed to supporting the LSU flagship agenda, which extends beyond the traditional classroom and throughout the state.”

Weimer will sign the agreement Friday, Sept. 18, in Pleasant Hall at LSU along with Marie Frank, director of purchasing and property management for LSU and Dorinda Folse, area director of OSHA.

LSU Continuing Education offers several safety training and management courses through its professional development program. The alliance will allow OSHA further use of its resources in these courses.

“This is a relationship that has existed for quite some time,” said Lisa Verma, program manager of LSU Professional Development. “Although now we will have additional access to OSHA publications and other valuable materials for training. OSHA’s expertise will help improve our existing safety courses and also develop new courses in the future.”

OSHA currently has more than 470 alliances throughout the nation with various associations, agencies and other organizations committed to safety and health. Louisiana is in OSHA Region 6, which also includes Arkansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
