| BATON ROUGE – LSU’s College of Basic Sciences has received a total of $7.6 million in funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, or ARRA, more commonly known as the stimulus bill. “This level of success is tangible evidence of the quality of our faculty and the relevance of their resource programs to contemporary research questions and challenges,” said Kevin Carman, dean of the college. “In addition to supporting outstanding research, it is important to note that these federal funds directly stimulate the local and state economy by providing jobs and local businesses.” According to the college, a total of 21 faculty have received funding for 18 individual research projects. Thirteen faculty successfully applied for and received a total of $4.7 million in funding from the National Science Foundation, and eight faculty members have received a total of $2.9 million from the National Institutes of health. All six departments – biological sciences, chemistry, physics and astronomy, computer science, geology and mathematics – as well as the LSU Museum of Natural Science, which is included in the college, received funding that stemmed from ARRA. The Department of Biological Sciences, together with the Department of Chemistry, account for $5.7 million of the total funding. “As you can see by these impressive figures, our researchers have been extremely proactive in going out and securing external funding,” said Carman. “In addition, several large proposals are still being considered by various federal funding agencies. We are exceptionally proud of the work our researchers put into both their science and seeking out grant opportunities such as these.” For more information about LSU’s College of Basic Sciences, visit http://science.lsu.edu/. -30- |
