Re: Request for Nominations for Provost’s Fellows Program
The Office of Academic Affairs announces the establishment of the Provost’s Fellows Program, a leadership development program for faculty members who have demonstrated leadership potential and have an interest in becoming more familiar with LSU’s policy-making processes and administrative structure and/or pursuing a role in the University’s administration. One to two fellows will be chosen to work with the Provost or the Vice Chancellor for Research for the 2009-2010 academic year.
Tenured full professors are encouraged to apply. Fellows will be appointed for up to 50% of their assigned duties to work with the Office of Academic Affairs or the Office of Research and Economic Development on selected projects that advance the goals of LSU’s Flagship Agenda. Specifically, the program will provide faculty members exposure to University leadership, policy and operations in the areas outlined below:
Academic Affairs
Student Success: Course delivery and tracking; student retention and graduation; student-support services; innovations in learning; and issues related to on-line course development.
Faculty Development: Faculty recruitment, retention and success including promotion and tenure issues; campus climate, culture, and collegiality; leadership development; new faculty success; planning and executing new programs and projects.
University Planning and Assessment: Includes the areas of strategic, academic and resource planning and delivery; SACS accreditation and associated reporting; identifying, tracking and reporting performance measures.
University Relations: Communication and/or reporting to the boards of Regents and Supervisors, legislative and executive branches of government, and the general public.
Research and Economic Development
Research Integrity: Responsible conduct of research; protection of research subjects; conflicts of interest; management, sharing, and retention of data; orientation and mentoring of faculty and post-doctoral scholars; reviewing and updating research policies; responding to allegations of research misconduct; and assuring compliance with research and sponsored program regulations.
Research Support: Research related to financial issues facing the University; analysis of cost-share on grant proposals, faculty start-up, facility costs; animal equipment/facilities and laboratory equipment; and general grant processing.
Development of Social Science Research: Coordinate campus-wide social science research; identify external funding opportunities in the social sciences; develop and implement strategies aimed at facilitating extramurally funded social science research; develop and organize faculty research development opportunities for the social sciences.
Faculty members chosen to participate in the program will receive up to a 0.5 FTE appointment for a fiscal year (two semesters including additional compensation in the summer term). Departments will retain the unexpended salary associated with the budgeted salary of the faculty member.
Applicants should submit (1) a letter specifying the applicant’s relevant expertise, experience, and future career goals (2) a current curriculum vita and (3) a letter of support from the applicant’s department head (or dean if the applicant is a department head).
To nominate or to self-nominate, please e-mail the required materials, no later than September 30, 2009, to Stephenie Werline, Assistant to the Vice Provost, at sfrank4@lsu.edu. Applications will be reviewed by a committee to be designated by the Provost, and finalists will be interviewed. Fellows will be announced by October 30, 2009.
If you have any questions about the program, please contact Chuck Wilson, Vice Provost, at cwilson@lsu.edu. I look forward to receiving your nominations. |
