| Jean M. Rohloff
College of Arts & Sciences
Department of English
Dr. Rohloff possesses an exceptional and long-standing commitment not only to integrating quality service-learning activities in her own classes but also to facilitating other classes in the English Department. Dr. Rohloff is a highly dedicated professional who knows how to motivate her students to strive for excellence through dynamic course content. Through her years of civic engagement, she and her writing students have provided invaluable services to hundreds of public school students. Dr. Rohloff has developed courses with an emphasis on improving education in Louisiana, working closely with East Baton Rouge Parish public schools to provide tutoring and other literacy activities for elementary students. Most recently, her mini-grant writing assignment has produced dramatic results in her students’ writing skills and concrete results for public schools through learning enhancements such as touch screens and gym equipment. In the process, LSU students learned that writing effects change in their world. Dr. Rohloff’s students saw the tangible results of their grant-writing, and the public schools received needed improvements and supplies. This innovative approach is a model of what service-learning can achieve: a productive symbiosis. |
