Definition of Assessment
Assessment is the systematic evaluation of results, incorporating a variety of methods for collecting and analyzing information. Through assessment we analyze our effectiveness in meeting stated purposes and use the results to improve university programs, services, and facilities. Assessment also aids in the effective allocation of resources on the institutional, divisional, college, departmental, and unit levels.
Institutional Purpose
LSU is a comprehensive, doctoral research university, designated as both a land- and sea-grant institution and designated by the Carnegie Foundation as a Research University I. LSU's mission is "the generation, dissemination, and application of knowledge and cultivation of the arts for the benefit of the people of the state, the nation, and the global community."
Commitment to Assessment Practices
LSU is committed to achieving the highest standards in teaching, research, and service by continuously improving its programs. At the heart of this commitment is the systematic assessment of student needs and student learning outcomes. Through assessment the University analyzes its effectiveness in meeting stated purposes.
University Planning Council
The University Planning Council is charged with the responsibility of defining the mission, strategic goals, and direction of the University; and with developing the overall university planning and assessment process.
Office of Budget and Planning
The Office of Budget and Planning serves as the key office for the compilation, analysis, and dissemination of data about students, personnel, finances, and facilities. Its primary goal is to provide timely and accurate information to the University community for decision making. In meeting this goal the office is moving toward electronic dissemination of information. In support of the assessment process, the office will provide specific information required for program review as well as studies and reports requested by colleges, departments, and other administrative units.
Center for Assessment & Evaluation
Located in 51 Himes Hall, the Measurement and Evaluation Center provides test and measurement services for colleges and programs. Institutional surveys used for campus assessment are coordinated by the center.
Internal Program Review Process
The LSU Program Review Process requires the internal review of all bachelors, masters, and doctoral degree programs in each discipline. Results of this process are shared with the University Planning Council and the University Budget Committee. |
