LSU is one of 30 institutions in an ''Expanded Pilot'' group to use the new Principles of Accreditation approved by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC) in December 2001 as it seeks reaffirmation of accreditation. The university's accreditation is reaffirmed every 10 years by the Commission. LSU's review will culminate with a determination of reaffirmation by the Commission in December of 2004.
The new Principles of Accreditation are based on the following:
- fostering a strong culture of institutional integrity;
- enhancing the quality of an institution's programs and services within the context of its missions, resources, and capacities; and
- creating an environment in which teaching, research, and learning occurs.
Primary components of the new Principles are the Certification of Compliance with SACSCOC Core Requirements and Comprehensive Standards; the Quality Enhancement Plan; and acceptable yearly, consultative and evaluative internal reviews and expanded Fall and Winter Institutional Profiles.
The university will participate in a Peer Review Process that will include both an Off-Site Review and an On-Site Review by Commission representatives. The 8-Step Peer Review Process will be as follows:
- LSU will prepare and submit its Compliance Certification with supporting documentation;
- the Compliance Certification will be reviewed by an Off-Site Peer Review Committee;
- the Off-Site Review Committee will forward its preliminary findings to the On-Site Peer Review Committee;
- LSU will also prepare and submit its Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP);
- the On-Site Review Committee will visit LSU to review the QEP and any portion of the Compliance Certification as advised by the Off-Site Review Committee or as determined while on campus;
- the On-Site Review Committee will forward its report (Reaffirmation Committee Report) to LSU for response;
- LSU will provide a response to the Reaffirmation Committee Report; and
- The Commission will review the Report and LSU's response and take action on reaffirmation.
