WHAT WE'RE ABOUT

Globalization is here to stay, but what course it takes is far from predetermined. That will depend on how it is shaped by actors competing in the global arena. The International Studies [I.S.] Program offers interdisciplinary degrees (both major and minor) intended to prepare students to work in that exciting new arena.

The degree is designed to equip I.S. graduates with critical skills, flexible thinking, creat- ivity, and a cosmopolitan view of world issues. This will enable them to rise to the challenges of working comfortably across linguistic, cultural and disci- plinary borders. To this end, the curriculum straddles traditional departmental divisions, combin- ing insights drawn from different disciplines around a common regional or global concentration.

In particular, the program links four core disciplines (cultural anthropology, geography, his- tory, and political science) in examining how the world works – as seen both from above and below and from local, national, regional, and planetary per- spectives. Students are helped to undertake internships, en- couraged to study abroad, and recommended to combine the I.S. major with a minor in a second field such as foreign languages, political science, social science, business, mass communication, or engineering. Quite a lot of I.S. students opt for double majors.

New Curriculum
The new revised I.S. curriculum began the Fall 2006 semester. In addition to simplifying the rather complicated old catalog text, we have added various new requirements intended to streamline and enhance the training you will get as an I.S. major or minor. The new curriculum requirements apply to anyone who declares the major from Fall 2006 onwards. Otherwise, you should follow the requirements that were in place, when you declared.

New Concentrations
We are pleased to announce three new I.S. concentrations. They are all global studies options, namely: Global Diplomacy, Environment & Development, and Colonialism & Diasporas. That now makes four global studies choices. [See website/curriculum/major].

New Internships Program
I.S. is preparing a new Internships Course / INTL 3099. When it has been approved, it will enable students to earn credits for academic work completed during the course of an internship. In the meantime, you can use INTL 3002 for the same purpose [See website/program/internships].
