The world premiere of a new play at LSU, "Cocktail," is the centerpiece for a set of collaborative ventures in CMST that investigate artistic and scientific approaches to understanding and dealing with the global HIV/AIDS crisis. "Cocktail," co-written by LSU Professor of Biochemistry Vince LiCata and internationally-acclaimed avant-garde theatre artist Ping Chong, will be performed at LSU's Reilly Theatre April 20-May 6 2007 www.swinepalace.org/
Patricia A. Suchy and Jenn Erdely, assisted by student workers in Studio 151, are working on a video documentary of the experimental collaboration between scientists and performing artists working on "Cocktail." Stephanie Grey is curator for a special display of art associated with HIV/AIDS, currently on display in the Reilly Theatre lobby. Both Dr. Grey's and Dr. Suchy's projeccts are funded by a Faculty Research Grant.
"Cocktail" takes its title from the pharmaceutical therapy used to treat HIV/AIDS and explores the work of Thai scientists-activist Dr. Krisana Kraisintu. Her innovations in treating AIDS include combining drugs into a one-pill "cocktail" and establishing local production of these drugs in Asian and African Countries where the AIDS crisis is most acute. Dr. Kraisintu herself will visit LSu and deliver her Chancellor's Distinguished Lecture on Monday, April 30, at 2:00 pm in the Reilly Theatre. Details are at www.research.lsu.edu/cdlslectures.shtml
Select pieces of the art are temporarily on display in the Department of Communication Studies.
