Curriculum Vitae

I joined the faculty here as an assistant professor in 1987, just after completing my dissertation at UNC-Chapel Hill. My research asks how social networks allocate resources in various contexts. I have studied the way in which social networks affect job-finding, job satisfaction, and health outcomes, through the provision of both tangible aid and social support. My current research, with colleagues John Beggs (LSU) and Valerie Haines (University of Calgary), explores the effects that network capital exerts on health outcomes in disadvantaged areas. I am also working with John Beggs and Ed Shihadeh to explore how the level of victimization in social networks affects fear of crime in disadvantaged areas.
