Congratulations to Ph.D. candidate Aaryn Ward who recently won a dissertation grant from the American Educational Research Association. Her dissertation is a quantitative study of the educational outcomes of low-SES students who attend higher-SES schools. Way to go Aaryn!

Charles Tolbert, Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology at Baylor University, gave the last brown bag presentation of this academic year. Dr. Tolbert is a former faculty member of the LSU Sociology Department. His talk was titled, "Local Manufacturing Establishments and the Earnings of Manufacturing Workers: Insights from Matched Employer-Employee Data".

Congratulations to Lacie Michel for successfully defending her dissertation and accepting a job, as tenure-track Assistant Professor at Louisiana Tech University. Congratulations, Dr. Michel!

Tom Durant retired on August 6, 2009, having completed 36 years of service at LSU. We thank Tom for all his years of hard work on behalf of our department and university and wish him all the best in his retirement.

Graham Ousey, Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at College of William and Mary, gave the last brown bag presentation of this academic year. Dr. Ousey is a graduate of the LSU Sociology Department (PhD, 1997.) Dr. Ousey's talk was titled "Something Old, Something New: Revisiting Competing Hypotheses of the Victimization-Offending Relationship among Adolescents” and had a record attendance of 34.

Yoshinori Kamo was featured in the Spring 2009 edition of Legacy magazine. The article, titled "Lost in Translation," discussed Dr. Kamo's activism and scholarship following the 1992 shooting of Japanese exchange student Yoshi Hattori in Baton Rouge.
