Research & Workshops > Baton Rouge Social Surveys > Overview BR area survey

Every spring term since 2000, undergraduate students enrolled in Sociological Methods (SOCL 2211) conduct a social survey of Baton Rougeans. The survey covers a wide range of social, economic, political, and ideological topics.  Since each new cohort of students redesigns the survey, the questions vary. However, a basic set of questions remains unchanged, and several additional questions have been repeated on many surveys.  In the process of designing the questionnaire, the students decide upon a set of topics to study, and subsequently search national databases for questions to replicate from other surveys that address those topics.  This enables comparison of Baton Rougeans with either the general American population or all Southerners.  Students also write new questions when they feel that previously asked questions do not capture their interests.

Guided by their own hypotheses, the students analyze the survey results, comparing Baton Rouge to national and southern samples, and write short reports describing their findings. A final report on results from the Baton Rouge Area survey is traditionally presented to the Baton Rouge mayor early in May.
