Curriculum Vitae | |
I am in my sixth year of Ph.D. studies at LSU, with an expected graduation date of May 2010. Currently, I am teaching introductory sociology and writing my dissertation under the direction of Susan Dumais. I have also served as a research assistant and a managing editor of the journal Rural Sociology.
In my dissertation, I am using content analysis to explore the construction of culture in an online community of the childfree. My research interests primarily involve demographic, historical, and cultural studies of fertility. Current working papers study sex and race differentials in contraceptive sterilization and the fertility intentions of women in poverty. My research has been published in Journal of Family History.
As a teacher, I structure introductory courses around the practice and concept of the sociological imagination. In addition to teaching core principles with interactive lecture and discussion, I incorporate multimedia from a variety of outlets and perspectives. By drawing the “real world” into the classroom, I guide students to recognize and critically examine social forces in their own lives.
