I joined the Sociology Department at LSU in 2002, after receiving my PhD from Harvard University. My research focuses on the ways that society is stratified, particularly in the areas of class and gender, and within the contexts of education and culture. I recently completed a project comparing the academic attitudes and extracurricular activities of high school sophomores in 1990 and 2002, using data from the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 and the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002; findings from this project are published in Social Science Research and Sociological Spectrum.
Current projects include:
(1) An investigation of the components of cultural capital and the mechanisms through which cultural capital translates into educational outcomes; data for this project come from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study and the National Household Education Survey.
(2) An analysis of the barriers faced by first-generation college goers as they make the transition from high school to postsecondary education. One component of this project uses data from the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 to identify the differences in access to college information for first- and non-first-generation students. A second, qualitative component to the project is under development.
