Friends of Hilltop Programs
Emory Smith donated his Hilltop property to Louisiana State University in 1981 with the stipulation that it be managed and maintained by the LSU School of Landscape Architecture and remain an outdoor laboratory for the study, display and enjoyment of native plant communities displayed in their natural habitats. Our programs include:
  • PlantFest! The Fall PlantFest! is a major fundraising activity at Hilltop Arboretum. The sale boasts the "broadest selection of native plants at any one time and place in the southeastern United States."
  • Hodge Podge is an ongoing volunteer effort that involves propagating and growing donated plants for sale at PlantFest! and throughout the year.
  • Garden Tour Series Spring and Fall tours showcase a selection of Baton Rouge's most prized gardens.
  • Symposium An annual event featuring lectures by nationally-recognized experts in horticulture, landscape architecture, and sustainable design accompanied by a plant sale.
  • Junior Master Gardener Program a new program for 2009.
