2009 SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPE PROGRAMS
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Hilltop’s 2009 Sustainable Landscape Series is an adult education program focused on sustainable landscape design, gardening and tree care. Mark your calendar and plan to join us at the Margaret Brown Homes Pavilion for four exciting quarterly programs and speakers. Program I: Sustainable Landscape Design 101
Saturday, March 14, 9-12 noon
Speaker: Bill Fontenot
Registration Deadline: March 13th
Bill Fontenot is a long-time consulting ecologist, native plant nursery owner and author. Bob Dillemuth said “Bill has been into sustainable ornamental landscaping before it was cool”. Bill will be presenting a planning checklist for sustainable landscape design, installation and maintenance. In addition, Bill will also talk about his favorite and most sustainable list of ornamental trees, shrubs and wildflowers. This program would be very helpful to any gardener trying to re-establish a Gustav damaged garden or designing a new one. Mr. Fontenot will have his books available for sale.
Program II: Designing A Rain Garden
Saturday, May 2, 9-12 noon
Speaker: Susan Ludwig
Registration Deadline: April 18
Susan Ludwig, former owner of Raintree Nursery and Gardens and now currently a Community Planner with Center For Planning Excellence, is an expert on rain gardens. This program will focus on a practical step-by-step process to help you design and build a rain garden in your backyard. You don’t want to miss this program which will include a personal tour of Ms. Ludwig’s rain garden she designed and constructed herself. Her amazing garden was featured in Hilltop’s 2008 Fall Garden Tour.
Program III: Backyard Wildflower Gardening
Saturday, Jul. 11, 9-12 noon
Speaker: Paul Orr
Registration Deadline: June 27
Paul Orr, Hilltop’s Site Manager, will take you on a tour of Hilltop’s wildflower meadow and demonstrate mechanical and chemical procedures you can use in your backyard to grow native wildflowers without prescribed burning. Mr. Orr will begin the program with an exquisite presentation of photographs of wildflowers from Hilltop’s meadow and discuss the benefits they provide for wildlife, birds and the ecosystem. This program was canceled in the fall of 2008 due to Hurricane Gustav.
PROGRAM IV: Sustainable Pond Management

Speakers: Brian Leblanc, Ph.D
Brac Salyers

Brian Leblanc Ph.D (trained marine pathobiologist with LSU AgCenter’s Calegari Environmental Center) and Brac Salyers (Aquatic Nuisance Species Coordinator with LA Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries) have been working with Hilltop to adopt sustainable pond management strategies for our pond. Their presentation will be centered on recreational pond management and will include water quality issues, aquatic weed control, and fish population management. If you have a pond in your backyard or neighborhood to manage you must attend this program.
