GETTING STARTED > GET AN ACCOUNT > REQUEST A WEB ACCOUNT

Information Technology Services hosts departmental, faculty, and organizational Web sites that are backed up nightly, and mirrored to a back-up Web server. ITS allocates 50MB of space to Web clients.

A request for initial hosting service can be submitted to our Accounts Coordinator via the Web Account Request form. Additional hosting space can be requested by e-mailing ITS Help Desk.

These requests will be evaluated, approved, or denied on an individual basis. Email accounts for those Web sites, if desired, will be allocated as lsu.edu accounts. WWW.LSU.EDU itself will not provide email services. FTP client access should provide the necessary functions to maintain Web files. Information about FTP services can be found at the ITS Web site, www.lsu.edu/its, under Popular Links > Web site Development > Publishing Your Web site (FTP).

Students
Student Web hosting is available through TigerBytes II powered by Xythos. For instructions on creating a Web site in TigerBytes II, please see the GROK article: http://grok.lsu.edu/Article.aspx?articleId=9656.

Faculty
The URL to access these pages will be <www.lsu.edu/faculty/UserID/filename.html> where "UserID" will be your PAWS UserID.

Departmental Pages
The URL to access these pages will be www.lsu.edu/department/department_name, where the "department_name" is a unique string that will be determined by ITS. If you would like to suggest a string to be used for your department name, please use the comments section of the Web request form to specify your suggestions. If you request an email account, you may also suggest a string for the email in the comments section. Information Technology Services cannot promise to accommodate all requested URLs, but will work with the user to come up with an acceptable URL.

There will be a unique group ID defined for each site and a site log on ID created for that group. This log on ID will be associated with an individual. For departments, it will be the LSU faculty or staff person requesting the site.
Ultimate control of sites, however, will reside with the department chair for departmental sites. As it is common for department heads and faculty sponsors to change, the current department chair is responsible for updating designees and contact information to Information Technology Services.

Although ITS does not currently plan to charge for Web site resources, a budget code must be provided for setting up the new Web site user IDs.

Professional Organizations
The URL to access these pages will be www.lsu.edu/organization/organization_name, where the "organization_name" is a unique string that will be determined by ITS. If you would like to suggest a string to be used for your organization name, please use the comments section of the Web request form to specify your suggestions. If you request an email account, you may also suggest a string for the e-mail in the comments section. Information Technology Services cannot promise to accommodate all requested URLs, but will work with the user to come up with an acceptable URL.

There will be a unique group ID defined for each site and a site log on ID created for that group. This log on ID will be associated with an individual i.e., the LSU faculty or staff person requesting the site. Ultimate control of sites, however, will reside with the organization's faculty sponsor for professional organizations. Faculty sponsors are responsible for updating designees and contact information with ITS.

Student Organizations
The URL to access these pages will be www.lsu.edu/student_organizations/organization_name. The character string used for "organization_name" will be determined by Information Technology Services at the time the Web site is defined. If you would like to suggest a string to be used for your organization name, please use the comments section of the Web request form to specify your suggestions. If you request an e-mail account, you may also suggest a string for the e-mail in the comments section. ITS cannot promise to accommodate all requested URLs, but will work with the user to come up with an acceptable URL.

Each organization's site must contain LSU's standard disclaimer. The organization's site is subject to approval before publication.
    Disclaimer:
The statements and opinions included in
Your Student Organization's pages are those of Your Student Organization only. Any statements and opinions included in these pages are not those of Louisiana State University or the LSU Board of Supervisors.
There will be a unique UNIX group ID defined for each site and a site log on ID. This ID will be associated with the faculty sponsor. It is the faculty sponsor's responsibility to govern the Web site's content and to give the site's log on ID and password to those who will maintain the Web site. If a faculty sponsor refuses the responsibility for an existing organizational Web site, the site will be removed.

A backup of the materials from the Web site will be kept for a period of approximately six months. If the organization does not reinstitute the site within that six months, the materials will be deleted permanently. As it is common for faculty sponsors to change, Information Technology Services will periodically contact the individuals associated with the site log on IDs to confirm the status and make updates as responses indicate.

The budget code used for all student organization sites will be "Student Services." No value is required in this field for student organizations.

Campus Departments & Units
ITS no longer offers StudioWeb for campus departments and units that need assistance with the development of their Web site. Beginning in 2009, a new Web Content Management System will be in place through University Relations featuring already established templates. ITS will work to migrate the former StudioWeb sites into the new WCMS. To request a Web site in the new WCMS, please contact Lori Kemp in University Relations.
