About the School>Why the Manship School is Exceptional

What Makes the Manship School Exceptional

Exceptional faculty. Our faculty bring years of experience and national reputations to the classroom and to research projects. They have worked as reporters, editors and producers; served in Congress and the State Department; managed promotional campaigns at The Walt Disney Company; designed advertising and public relations initiatives for companies and agencies; and practiced in law firms. They hold doctoral degrees in political science, history, and sociology, as well as in journalism and mass communication. In recent years, two were named the outstanding journalism educator in the nation and the dean was named the outstanding journalism administrator in the country.

Exceptional research. The faculty, along with graduate students, produces cutting-edge research that appears in top scholarly journals and books. Research programs benefit from the school’s Reilly Center for Media & Public Affairs, which funds research and symposia, and from one of the largest survey research centers in the country.

Exceptional equipment and facilities. Manship students work on superb equipment in one of the most beautiful mass communication buildings in the country. Computer labs, production facilities and a digital television studio that is better than many commercial facilities provide hands-on experience.

Exceptional undergraduate curriculum. Undergraduates focus on a specific area of mass communication - print/broadcast journalism, advertising, public relations or political communication. At the same time, they acquire a broad appreciation of media in society and a strong liberal arts education. Students gain the skills to land their first jobs, and the knowledge to become leaders.

Exceptional graduate program. The Manship School has the only doctoral program in the world focused exclusively on media and public affairs. Personal attention from senior faculty and one of the best financial packages in the country attract top-performing students with unique backgrounds. And collaboration with other departments such as Political Science helps provide an experience students won’t find anywhere else.

Exceptional standards and opportunities. The school has high admission standards and small classes. Students get to know one another - and faculty members - well. There simply isn’t a program with better opportunities for internships, externships, research, and access to internationally-known speakers.

Exceptional history. The Manship School is one of the oldest programs of its kind in the nation. Dating back to 1913, it merges with leading-edge research and technology to help students learn in the classroom - and beyond. It’s a place where students get a sense of purpose and the spirit to excel.
