| | Scripps Howard Academic Leadership Academy
The media's future will be shaped by the schools of mass communication of today. Yes, it's a bit cliché; but it is true. We consider this often in our teaching but rarely in regard to administration. We lose sight of the vital importance of mentoring would-be administrators so they may learn to work within university and college systems to foster quality education and research. The Manship School and the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication are proud to host such an effort – the Scripps Howard Academic Leadership Academy to be held June 4-8, 2006.
Selection Process -- Application Deadline January 15, 2006
We are still working out details of the program but here's what we know. The Academy will assemble a select group of up-and-coming mass communication professionals and academics interested in taking on leadership roles. These potential leaders will hear from current and past mass communication administrators about the rewards and challenges of deanships.
Speakers will include: Dr. Beth Barnes, Director of the School of Journalism and Telecommunications at University of Kentucky; Dr. Del Brinkman, Dean Emeritus of University of Colorado-Boulder’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication; Dr. Everette Dennis, Director of the Center for Communications in the Fordham University Graduate School of Business Administration; Dean Thomas Kunkle of University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism; Associate Dean of Prizes and Programs Arlene Morgan from Columbia University’s School of Journalism; and Dr. Shirley Staples Carter, Director of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of South Carolina.
An advisory committee will select up to 15 participants to attend based on shown leadership potential and interest. Scripps Howard will cover travel, lodging and most meals for all participants.
