 | 3x5 Cards
What's a "3x5"?
In Louisiana bird lingo, "3x5" refers to the 3x5 index cards used for individual records of birds. A file of these cards, with preprinted information fields, has been maintained at the LSU Museum of Natural Science since 1948 as a database for important bird records. They are filed by species, in taxonomic order, with most recent cards first. The cards have formed the backbone of Louisiana regional reports for the journal North American Birds (formerly called Field Notes, American Birds, and Audubon Field Notes). One estimate is that 50,000 cards are on file. They are currently being used by Remsen and Cardiff to compile records and analyze patterns of seasonal distribution for their book draft on the birds of Louisiana.
The digital 3x5's will be printed out as hard copies on card stock for the 3x5 file. In the near future we will begin the process of entering all 3x5 records into an electronic database where individuals can access the records.
