Technology Transfer Process at LSU
In the course of research, it is likely that certain new ideas, inventions, or discoveries may emerge. While such work may lead to much-deserved academic recognition for the individuals making such inventions, it is also possible that society at large may benefit from commercialization of state-of-the-art technologies.
Invention Disclosures
When an employee believes that a invention has been conceived or reduced to practice (regardless of ownership considerations), he/she should immediately notify the Office of Intellectual Property by preparing a Technology Disclosure Form (OIP-002) which includes a description of the invention, pertinent sketches or drawings, and data to explain the operation and performance principles. This Technology Disclosure Form is available from the Office of Intellectual Property; or it may be downloaded from the Forms section of the OIP website.
Upon receipt of a Technology Disclosure Form, the Office of Intellectual Property will evaluate the technical and economic merits of each disclosure. Those disclosures that meet certain criteria will be assigned to patent attorneys, who in close consultation with the inventors, will prepare, file, and prosecute patent applications until issuance of a patent (or abandonment).
Reporting Requirements
Researchers should be fully aware of and meticulously comply with any and all reporting requirements to the sponsors of research projects, whether federal, state, or private, including but not limited to reporting of inventions. Also researchers should promptly report new inventions to the Office of Intellectual Property.
