Jonathan Alford, LSU biochemistry graduate, has always enjoyed helping people and participated in volunteer work frequently. He is now an Organ Placement Specialist at the United Network for Organ Sharing, where he plays an instrumental part in saving the lives of patients.

Jonathan works with many others to assist in the collection of donor information and the placement and transportation of organs. Jonathan’s most rewarding experience at his job was successfully placing a new set of lungs with a young adult near his age. He said that nothing is more heartwarming than knowing that because he was doing his job that day he helped someone immensely. It is not always easy—there is the reality that many people will not receive the transplants they need each day. Jonathan states that this emotional aspect is a difficult part of the job. Additionally, the hours are demanding; his hours include 12-hour shifts, being on call and working on weekends and holidays.

LSU taught Jonathan time management and people skills. Learning to juggle a job, volunteer schedule and schoolwork while in college definitely prepared him for his current job position. People skills also come in handy while working at a job where you must keep in touch with several people in different parts of the country.

Jonathan is a registered organ and tissue donor. He suggests that people think about the benefits: organ donors can save up to seven lives, and tissue donors can save up to 50, including giving someone the ability to see again.
