John Andrew Nyman is the owner of River Oaks Wetland Services, an energy and environmental consulting company. Dr. Nyman also serves as an Associate Professor in the LSU School of Renewable Natural Resources.

Dr. Nyman did not start visiting the wetlands until high school, but he is now highly involved in their protection and restoration. He received his undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences, his master's degree in Wildlife from LSU and his doctorate of Oceanography and Coastal Studies from LSU. He began his career at the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries as a Wildlife Specialist, continued on to teach at University of Lafayette, and is presently tenured at LSU. He stumbled into the wetland consulting business, which he now does on the side. Also, he has received awards for his restoration efforts with Louisiana and the federal government.

He enjoys everything about his job except for the paperwork. He especially enjoys “figuring out why a wetland responded the way it did to events.” Dr. Nyman has hope for the future of the wetlands. He encourages people to realize that we need at least allow the river to build new wetlands, instead of only focusing on the loss of existing wetlands.

Dr. Nyman encourages students to take advantage of the opportunities available to them as undergraduates, because it was one of his regrets as a graduate student. He suggests that students participate in field-based summer work such as with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
