Christina Rentz, LSU English literature graduate, has always been enthusiastic about the things she loves. Her enthusiasm led her to a more public relations-related job position: head of publicity for bands on the Merge Record Label.
Christina was always a big music fan, but she initially thought she wanted to be an English professor. She participated in KLSU and fell in love with independent rock. She was a DJ her sophomore year and music director her senior year. At KLSU, she learned the skills she needed to do her current job. These skills were more beneficial to her than her other required courses. Christina stresses that it is important for students to work in student media and participate in internships especially if they want a career in the music industry.
Merge Records has grown since Christina started working there eight years ago. The most exciting part of her job was watching the company grow and succeed. Seeing some of their bands on Saturday Night Live was a major highlight of her career. The company’s twentieth birthday celebration was one of her favorite publicity events in which she participated. She said there were 35 bands from around the world. “It was amazing!” she exclaimed.
Christina enjoys her job and is very enthusiastic about it. The gratitude on the face of a band when they see things they never imagined executed is an awesome sight and a rewarding part of her job. Christina encourages students to be specific in their goals and in what sector of the music industry they wish to work.
