Why Service-Learning?

Research indicates service-learning has a significant impact on academic objectives. Service-learning students report:
  • deeper understanding of course material
  • improved ability to apply theoretical knowledge to real problems
  • motivation to work harder
  • enhanced college experience through stronger relationships with faculty and student peers
  • improved leadership skills
  • reduction in negative stereotypes and an enhanced tolerance for diversity
  • deeper understanding of the complexity of social issues
  • increased sense of connection to the community
  • greater self-knowledge

Eyler, J. & Giles, D. E. (1999). Where’s the Learning in Service-Learning? San Francisco: Jossey-Bass.

For students to learn effectively, they first need to be engaged. Service-learning helps promote both intellectual and civic engagement by linking the work students do in the classroom to real-world problems and real-world needs. Without compromising academic rigor or discipline-specific objectives, service-learning gives students concrete reasons for doing their personal best.
