LSU Student Handbook

Introduction

This online guide is designed to assist students in finding information relevant to their needs. It is organized in two broad sections: Rights and Responsibilities and Student Life and Academic Success at LSU.

LSU has a wealth of information and resources to help students have a successful experience at the University. By compiling this guide, we have concentrated information and weblinks that facilitate the ready accessibility of answers to many of the questions students may have.

Rights and Responsibilities

As stated in the Commitment to Community, “Louisiana State University is an interactive community in which students, faculty, and staff together strive to pursue truth, advance learning, and uphold the highest standards of performance in an academic and social environment.” Consistent with this commitment, LSU students are expected to “accept responsibility for [their] actions…, respect the dignity of all persons…, respect the environment and the rights and properties of others and the University” and embrace the “highest standards of academic, personal, and social integrity.” Perhaps most succinctly, LSU expects all of its students to be respectful, honest and responsible. Specific behaviors that may result in University sanctions may be found in the Code of Student Conduct.

The Code also outlines students’ rights under the University’s judicial process. In addition to these rights, students retain all the basic rights and freedoms guaranteed to all citizens. Other particular rights and responsibilities of LSU students are included in various Policy Statements (PS) and Permanent Memoranda (PM) that are outlined below.

I. Standards of Conduct/Due Process Procedures II. Alcohol, Drugs and Smoking Tobacco III. Student Privacy Rights (PS-30)
IV. Academic Issues V. Student Appeals Procedure (PS-48)
VI. Sexual Harassment Policy (PS-95)
VII. Student Governance VIII. Persons with Disabilities IX. Student Employment Issues X. Student Organization Issues XI. Miscellaneous
