Q. What is KLSU's format?
A. KLSU follows a format which combines College Alternative Rock with "free-form" specialty programs, plus the "Phantom Zone."

  • College Alternative Rock: Think of this as the music that commercial "alternative" rock stations will be playing a year to three years in the future. KLSU and other college alternative stations look for the best, new, cutting-edge music, and break it before it becomes mainstream. The Music Director manages the station's collection, and the DJ's on the air from 6am-9pm play from this collection.
  • Free-form Specialty programs: This wide range of musical formats from hip-hop, to jazz, to heavy metal, to alternative country, to '80's, to classic rock, to reggae, to local music, supplies programming from 9pm-1am weeknights and all day Saturday and Sunday. Specialty shows hosts play music from new releases in their genre's and from their personal collections. Needless to say, special show hosts have considerable latitude in the contents of their shows, and are trusted to be experts in their genre's. The "Specialty Show" schedule changes each semester, as students graduate, etc.
  • The "Phantom Zone": This is a computer-programmed music show, which airs when live DJs are not scheduled, typically between 1am-6am weekdays, and a bit later weekend mornings (college student's don't get up early on weekends). It combines the College Alternative Rock format with the "Free-form." The KLSU Music Computer contains a library of thousands of songs, and the computer randomly plays the songs from its library.
