 | LSU and Public Service – a longstanding tradition
public service (n) -- service that is performed for the benefit of the public, its institutions or its people; a service rendered in the public interest or “greater good”
public service (n) -- employment within a government system
There are two primary definitions of public service -- both of which are very important to a community and its citizens. LSU contributes much in terms of the first definition by way of instruction, continuing education, research, agricultural outreach, and more. While this sense of service permeates the entire University, the primary function of some units at the University is to extend LSU's resources to all the state's citizens. In addition, many student, faculty and staff organizations demonstrate their commitment to community in countless ways.
LSU also contributes to public service by way of the second definition. LSU has many alumni, as well as current employees – faculty and staff – who have served, or are serving, our country in federal public service positions, including Chancellor Sean O’Keefe. In a new program named Call to Serve, we will profile some of these individuals and highlight opportunities for LSU students to get involved in federal public service opportunities, such as internships, fellowships, and jobs. We will also provide other resources to encourage students to get involved in other public service opportunities, programs, and activities.
LSU is proud of its public service contributions and encourages all students to take an active role in building stronger communities and a stronger nation.
