Mass Communication Residential College – Jackson Hall

Opening fall 2010!

LSU Department of Residential Life and the Manship School of Mass Communication are excited to announce the opening of the new Mass Communication Residential College (MCRC) in Jackson Hall in fall 2010. This residential college is specifically designed to offer an educational and social community for the next generation of journalism, public relations, advertising, and political communication professionals. The program will be open to first- and second-year students, and any undergraduate international exchange students who are enrolled in the Manship School of Mass Communication. The MCRC will be home to approximately 100 students who will live in Jackson Hall, part of the Pentagon living and learning community. Residents in the MCRC will have the opportunity to engage in activities that will strengthen both their educational and professional careers.

Students will take at least two classes every semester with other MCRC students in one of the on-site community classrooms in Broussard Hall, located right behind the Pentagon. The MCRC will have on-site academic advisors with scheduled office hours, and students will have priority scheduling for their mass communication classes.

Faculty Involvement and Student Development
The MCRC provides a component of student life that interfaces learning both inside and outside the classroom and improves the academic atmosphere of LSU. An important part of the mission of the MCRC is to help acclimate students to the diversity of the mass communication field and empower them for successful careers. The Manship faculty and staff will conduct a variety of special seminars on topics such as resume writing and business etiquette to give students a head start in the professional environment.

There will also be study groups, an AP writing style tutoring program, and a one-on-one mentoring program designed to help new residents adjust to college life both socially and educationally.

As part of the living learning programs in the Pentagon and all residence hall communities, Residential Life sponsors the Faculty Friends Program. This program brings together students and faculty outside of the typical teaching experience in the classroom. Since 1994, Residential Life has invited all faculty members to participate in students’ lives in their campus living room! Faculty can become as involved as they want by actively participating in the hall programs, lectures, and fun events. Faculty Friends are leaders, mentors, teachers, advocates, role models and friends. Click here to learn more about the Faculty Friends Program.

Jackson Hall and Pentagon Community – Features

Jackson Hall is part of the Pentagon Community, consisting of three other similar residence hall buildings, LeJeune Hall, Beauregard Hall and Taylor Hall. The fifth building of the Pentagon is the service building with offices and the on-site laundry facility. Each stairwell of Jackson Hall has a kitchen that students can use for cooking meals, studying, or a small meeting room.

The Pentagon is located on the West side of campus, across from the Indian Mounds and next to the Greek Amphitheater and Enchanted Forest. From Jackson Hall, it is less than a five-minute walk to the Journalism Building, Hodges Hall, and the Quadrangle, where many first- and second-year classes will be held. The Hill Memorial Library, Tiger Stadium, the Pete Maravich Assembly Center (PMAC) and many other athletic facilities are also within a few minutes walking distance away.

Students study and relax at the nearby Greek Amphitheater and Indian Mounds.

MCRC residents living in Jackson Hall will use the 24-hour front desk service at the next-door Broussard Hall for administrative and maintenance issues.

Residents will also have access to Broussard's many common areas including several lounge and study areas, a computer lab, an outdoor terraced courtyard with a fountain and seating area, and a huge gathering room with a kitchen, big-screen television, foosball, air hockey and pool tables, as well as plenty of seating.

The 5 Dining Commons, located right outside the Pentagon’s back gate, is currently being completely renovated and is scheduled to reopen in fall 2009. It will be a state-of-the-art dining hall, with a mini-mart and late-night fast food restaurant similar to popular 459 Dining Commons on the east side of campus.

Residential Life will make several improvements to Jackson Hall prior to fall 2010; the rooms will be painted, all the bathrooms will be remodeled, and the build-in wardrobes will be replaced with new moveable ones.

Recently, Residential Life added brick and wrought iron gates between the five buildings of the Pentagon Community. The Pentagon courtyard is a popular community common area for residents, and the enclosing of the courtyard with card-access gates provides additional privacy as well as improved security. The Pentagon buildings are on the historical register, and the gates were designed to complement the architectural style of these historic buildings.
