Our Lady of the Lake Children's Ward Project
April 30, 2008

FAC Alli Hawbaker and volunteers visited the patients in the Children's Ward at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital.  The volunteers passed out goody bags with toys to brighten their day.  The smiles on their faces as they received their gifts said that our project was a success and truly did make a difference. The children are always so warm and spirited, despite their illnesses.  VLSU hopes to continue this relationship with OLOL Hospital, as it is a great way to show the community that they care!

Volunteer LSU Wildlife Conservation
April 19, 2008

Four LSU students, Leigh Potts, Leslie Smith, Janet Leingang, and FAC Michael Rhea, went deep into the southern Louisiana swampland to Jean Lafitte National Park and worked in conjunction with the NWF and the Student Conservation Association to remove hundreds of invasive Chinese Tallow trees. The park is a beautiful place, full of various plants and wildlife, providing LSU students with a rich natural experience. The volunteers saw a gator, several snakes, and a family of swamp rabbits during our work. Participants hope to return to work sometime in the future. Special thanks to SCA members Brian Vasa, Chris Bruno, Sarah Cannon, Paul Ward, Elizabeth Snyder, and Claire Poché. If interested in Gulf Coast restoration projects or internships dealing with natural resources and wildlife conservation, LSU students should visit thesca.org.

Ohio State University/ Louisiana State University BCS National Championship Service Project
January 6, 2008

Volunteer LSU, CCELL, the office of the chancellor, and public affairs coordinated a day of service with Ohio State. The project was at the Boys and Girls Club in New Orleans and involved making two baseball fields, building metal bleachers, painting a pool house, and sewing fleece blankets for the homeless in the area. The 200 participants from LSU included students, faculty, staff, alumni, administrators, the chancellor, Mike the Tiger, cheerleaders, and football players. A total of 500 people participated from both schools. Because of the National Championship excitement many media organizations were present, and it was a great way to show the nation LSU’s commitment to service. The day ended with Jambalaya and King Cake for lunch.

In collaboration with Student Life and Academic Services, The Chancellor's Office, LSU Office of Community Engagement, Learning, and Leadership and LSU Public Affairs.

Constitution Day Event
(collaboration with Union Program Council)
September 17, 2007

The Constitution Day Table Sit was a success. There was a solid turnout of students who filled out a Constitution Day Quiz, while others received information and forms necessary to register to vote. Vice Chancellor Matthews came by the table as well and met some of the student leaders working the table. There were pictures of the event and students really seemed to have fun learning about the Constitution.

The trip was also cosponsored by gifts of supplies and support from the LSU Student Government Association, Coca-Cola Bottling of Baton Rouge, Abita Springs Water, Canteen of Baton Rouge, and the University Presbyterian Church.
