Staff Senate at Work
 | LSU Staff Senate Activities
2006-2007
Executive Committee
• We continue to work with the Council of Staff Advisors to the LSU Board of Supervisors, to bring together representatives from all LSU System institutions.
• We worked with the LSU Faculty Senate President to develop an opportunity to speak on a regular basis with the Board of Supervisors.
• We have established Staff Senate representation on the Provost’s and LSU System President’s Search Committees.
• The Staff Senate President is currently serving on the Agenda for Change, Human Resource Initiative and the Civil Service Reform Committees.
• Staff Senate supported the Information Technology efforts, the first-year residency requirement, and the continuation of the LEAD… Emerge professional development program on campus by Resolutions.
Archive
• We have archived the following materials in Hill Memorial Library to document the history of the LSU Staff Senate and Staff Senate involvement in campus life: Staff Senate minutes (April 1999 – July 2006); related articles from The Reveille (1989 – 2002) and from LSU Today (1991 – 2006); Staff Senate Resolutions (1977 – 2006).
Benefits & Policies/Long Range Review & Planning
• We are investigating leave policies and employee benefits’ packages among colleges & universities in Louisiana and the U.S. southeast region.
• We are investigating whether a statewide systems policy change could help relieve burdens of recent fee increases like parking and employee-student additional services fees.
• We have continued dialogue with University Recreation to promote and establish programs to address improved fitness and overall health of our University population.
• We continue to work with HRM to monitor the Crisis Leave pool.
Budget & Finance/Governmental Relations
• We continue to monitor the University’s budget for staff raises.
• We continue to monitor legislative bills that affect employees in all areas.
Classified Committee
• We have researched crisis leave policies of other state agencies and universities and made comparisons to our policy.
• We continue to monitor proposed changes to the Classification and Pay Plan.
The Civil Service Commission approved to increase the maximums of the Administrative, Medical and Social Services Schedules by 14% and the Protective Services and Labor Trades Schedules by 10%.
• We have met with Kirsten Schwehm, the new ombudsperson on campus, to discuss her role with classified employees.
• We were instrumental in adding the Career Services link to the Staff Senate website.
• We are working with the Benefits and Policies Committee and HRM to seek improvement /changes to present evaluation process
Communications Committee
• We have redesigned the Staff Senate web page (www.lsu.edu/staffsenate) and have added archival material and new links.
• We have created a new brochure detailing responsibilities and accomplishments of the Staff Senate to be distributed at employee orientation meetings.
• We have created a bi-annual Staff Senate newsletter.
Holiday on Campus
• In early December, we hosted our 17th annual Holiday on Campus event for the LSU community following the Tree Lighting Ceremony. We collected over 200 lbs. of food for the Baton Rouge Food Bank and lots of toys for the Marine Corps “Toys for Tots” program from about 450 adults and 250 children who attended this event.
Professional
• We are working with Human Resource Management on ways to improve Performance Evaluations (PS-35) at LSU.
• We sponsored an Emotional Intelligence seminar in fall 2006 where 78 employees attended.
• We are sponsoring a spring professional development seminar titled “Speaking with Confidence” on April 20, 2007.
• We established Staff Senate representation on the Professional Training Development Manager Search Committee.
• We will sponsor the 3rd annual New Staff Reception in fall 2007.
Staff Senate Scholarship
• We will hold our annual fundraiser in March and explore new funding raising efforts to collect monies to support two scholarships: one for staff dependents and one for staff members themselves.
• In 1989, we began awarding the Staff Senate Scholarship fund to staff dependents; to date we have awarded scholarships to twenty-two recipients.
• In 2006, we awarded our recently developed Staff Senate Education Fund to our first staff employee recipient. |
