Record-breaking 50 students receive University Medals at Spring 2001 Commencement

Fifty students out of approximately 2,800 were presented with the University Medal at LSU's 244th commencement exercises May 18, an all-time record.

University Medals are given only to students who have maintained 4.0 grade-point averages throughout their college careers.

"This high number of Medalists is testimony to our commitment to academic excellence and to the dedication of our students and faculty to quality," said Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Daniel Fogel. The Medalists, along with the doctoral recipients, were recognized at the main ceremony.

Medalists are listed in alphabetical order:

Delia Alexandru, Vaslui, Romania

Alexandru, a Hector Baychock awardee and an out-of-state tuition awardee, received a degree in political science. The daughter of Crisan and Victoria Popescu, she plans to go on to graduate school.

Anita R. Bachireddy, Baton Rouge

Bachireddy received a bachelor of science degree in microbiology. Shewas an LSU TOPS 100 scholar, a member of Phi Eta Sigma, Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society, Alpha Epsilon Delta Premedical Society, Phi Beta Kappa, Golden Key National Honor Society, Angel Flight and Rotaract. She has received the Dean Arthur Choppin Award, an LSU Howard Hughes Summer Fellowship and Honors College Sophomore Honors Distinction.

She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Bachireddy and a graduate of Baton Rouge Magnet High School. After graduation, she plans to attend LSU Medical School in New Orleans.

Zsofia Banhegyi, Hungary

Banhegyi received a bachelor of science degree in biochemistry. She was the recipient of a Charles E. Coates scholarship, a Virginia Rice Williams scholarship, the 2001 Senior Biochemistry award, a Certificate for Academic Excellence and Sophomore Honors Distinction. She plans to attend medial school after graduation.

Banhegyi is the daughter of Zsolt Banhegyi ans Zsuzsanna Erdody of Hungary and a graduate of Karinthy Frigyes Bilingual High School.

Karen Anne Barbre, Baton Rouge

Barbre, who received a bachelor of music degree as a vocal performance major, received a Chancellor's Alumni Scholarship and is a member of Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society, Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society and Phi Kappa Lambda Music Honor Society. She served as an LSU representative to Louisiana Catholic College Students and is a member of the Honors College, the LSU Retreat Team and the LSU Cinema Club. She has earned several awards from the National Association of Teachers of Singing.

She is the daughter of Charles and Betty Barbre and a graduate of the Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts in Natchitoches. She plans to attend the University of Southern California for the graduate program in screen writing.

Brooke Elizabeth Bartels, Jacksonville, N.C.

Bartels, who received a bachelor in music degree in bassoon performance, was a 2001 LSU Concerto Competition winner and a 1998 winner of the Music Teachers National Association State Solo Woodwind Competition. She has served as principle bassoonist of both the LSU Wind Ensemble and the LSU Symphony and performs with the Baton Rouge Symphony. She was the recipient of the Presser Foundation Scholarship and was a member of the Honor Advocates. She received Sophomore Honors Distinction.

She is the daughter of Dennis and Lita Bartels of Jacksonville and a graduate of Jacksonville High School. She plans to attend Rice University on full scholarship, pursuing a master's degree in bassoon performance.

Julie Marie Beattie, Mandeville

Beattie, who received a bachelor of science degree in information systems and decision sciences, is a Phi Kappa Phi George Robertson awardee and was named the Outstanding Junior in the E. J. Ourso College of Business Administration. She is a member of several honor societies including Phi Eta Sigma, Alpha Lambda Delta and Golden Key National Honor Society. She is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, Omega Rho, the Association of Information Technology Professionals, Campus Crusade for Christ, The Chapel on the Campus and the LSU Foureaux Society. She received an LSU Honors Scholarship, a Louisiana Honors Scholarship, an Exxon Scholarship and the Reymond H. Pope Scholarship.

She is the daughter of Richard and Connie Beattie and a graduate of Mandeville High School.

Linnie Leigh Benezech, Broussard

Benezech, who received a bachelor of science degree in finance, was recipient of an LSU Chancellor's Aide Scholarship and a full-tuition scholarship to the LSU Law Center by the Faculty Scholarship Committee. She is a member of the LSU Honors College and the LSU Foureaux Society.

She is the daughter of James and Margo Benezech and a graduate of Comeaux High School in Broussard. She plans to attend LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center.

James Guenard Bethard Jr., Coushatta

Bethard, who received a bachelor of science degree in accounting, is a member of Beta Alpha Psi and served as its treasurer for a year. He is an Eagle Scout and serves on the troop committee of his Boy Scout troop. He also served on the Leadership Council for the United Methodist Campus Ministry. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James G. Bethard and a graduate of Riverdale Academy in Coushatta.

Bethard plans to attend LSU's Paul M. Hebert Law Center.

Betsy Rae Blanchard, Donaldsonville

Blanchard, who received a bachelor of science degree in accounting, received the Ernst and Young LLP Award, a Tiger Athletic Foundation award, the Arthur Anderson LLP Award and a Louisiana TOPS Performance award.

She is a member of Golden Key National Honor Society, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Fraternity, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society and the LSU Foureaux Society. She was also named the 2000 junior with the highest-grade point average by Beta Alpha Psi.

She is the daughter of Dennis and Beverly Blanchard and a graduate of Ascension Catholic High School in Donaldsonville.

Amanda G. Bluoin, Brusly

Blouin, who received a bachelor of science degree in microbiology, was named Outstanding Second-Year French Student by the department of French and Italian and was a Phi Kappa Phi George Robertson awardee. She is a member of several honor societies including Phi Eta Sigma and Alpha Lambda Delta for freshmen, Gamma Sigma Delta Agricultural, Phi Kappa Phi and Golden Key Honors and Alpha Epsilon Delta Premedical Honors.

She is the daughter of Stan Blouin and Joan Alleman and a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy in Baton Rouge. She plans to attend Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.

Carey Bollich, Bossier City

Bollich, who received a bachelor of science degree in animal, dairy and poultry science, was named Phi Kappa Phi Outstanding Senior and Outstanding LSU Freshman. She was also awarded the Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society Senior Scholarship and the American Society of Animal Science Scholarship Award. She is the daughter of William and Linda Bollich and a graduate of Parkway High School in Bossier City. Bollich plans to attend veterinary school at LSU for her D.V.M., then enter the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps as a captain.

Genea Torres Breaux, Napoleonville

Breaux, who received a bachelor of science degree in kinesiology, is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, the LSU Foureaux Society and Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society for freshmen. She was a recipient of an Outstanding Academic Excellence award, a Meritorious Academic Achievement award and an Outstanding Academic Achievement award.

She is the daughter of Don and Kim Torres, the wife of Kevin T. Breaux and a graduate of Assumption High School in Napoleonville. She plans to attend physical therapy school in New Orleans and pursue a master of physical therapy degree.

Meredith Lindsay Burke, Baton Rouge

Burke, who received a bachelor of science degree in accounting, was the recipient of the National Institute of Management Accountants Scholarship, Baton Rouge Chapter of the National Institute of Management Accountants Scholarship, the Louisiana Society of CPA's Scholarship and a TOPS full-tuition scholarship. She served as secretary of the LSU Accounting Society in 2000 and as the president in 2001.

She is the daughter of John and Elaine Burke and a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy in Baton Rouge. She plans to attend Wake Forest University to pursue a master's degree in accounting on a full-tuition scholarship.

Angela Sherell Byrd, Baton Rouge

Byrd, who received a bachelor of science degree in biochemistry, received a Chancellor's Alumni Scholarship, Teagle Foundation Scholarship, Robert C. Byrd Scholarship, National Achievement Scholarship, Phi Kappa Phi's George Robertson Award and the W.E.B. DuBois Award.

She is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, LSU Foureaux Society, Phi Kappa Phi Academic Honor Society, Alpha Epsilon Delta Premedical Honor Society and the Minority Science Preprofessional Society.

She is the daughter of Darell and Sharon Byrd and a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy in Baton Rouge. She plans to go on to medical school.

Robert Lloyd Carver, Baton Rouge

Carver, who received a bachelor of science degree in physics, was awarded the Keen-Morris prize for Outstanding Achievement in Physics, a LaSPACE Fellowship, Phi Kappa Phi's George Robertson Award and the R. Greg Hussey Award. He is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society, Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, Gamma Beta Phi and Sigma Pi Sigma. He has received an Alumni Top100 Scholarship and the Outstanding Pledge Scholarship award from Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He is a member of the College Republicans, Society of Physics Students and served as the secretary of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.

He is the son of James and Doris Carver and a graduate of Baton Rouge Magnet High School. After graduation, Carver plans to attend Rice University to obtain a Ph.D.

Jared Michael Cox, Thibodaux

Cox, who received a bachelor of science degree in microbiology, was recipient of a 1999 Phi Kappa Phi George Robertson Award, a Boyd Professor Foureaux Society Award and a President's Education Award. He has also received a TOPS scholarship, a Study Abroad Scholarship and a Chancellor's Student Aid Scholarship. He is a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta, Gamma Beta Phi and Phi Kappa Phi.

He is the son of Conrad and Terry Cox and a graduate of E.D. White Catholic High School in Thibodaux. He plans to attend LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.

Ana Marie Diaz, Honduras

Diaz received a bachelor of science degree in marketing. She was a 1999 Phi Kappa Phi George Robertson awardee, a Junior Division Meritorious Academic Achievement awardee, a Dow Chemical Junior Marketing and Reymond Holmes Pope scholarship recipient and an LSU full-tuition scholarship. She is a member of the LSU Foureaux Society, Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society and Golden Key National Honor Society.

She is the daughter of Jose and Ana Diaz and a graduate of the American School of Tegucigalpa in Honduras.

Yvonne Marie Douthat, Baton Rouge

Douthat, who received a bachelor of music degree in vocal performance, was recipient of a Baton Rouge Opera Guild Scholarship and a Tiger Athletic Foundation Scholarship. She has been named a U.S. Achievement Academy All-American Scholar and named to the National Dean's List. She is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda Music Honor Society and has won numerous regional and district awards from the National Association of Teachers of Singing. She is a member of the A Capella Choir at LSU and has performed in 10 LSU operas.

She is the daughter of John and Annette Douthat and a graduate of Baton Rouge Magnet High School. Douthat plans to attend the University of Houston master's degree program in vocal performance.

Michael Christopher Dubose, Lake Charles

DuBose, who received a bachelor of arts degree in economics, was named the 2000 Outstanding Micro Economics Student in LSU's department of economics. He served as vice president of the LSU Student Alumni Association.

He is the son of Michael W. DuBose and Carmen Istre and a graduate of Sam Houston High School in Lake Charles.

Jamie Elaine Edwards, Lafayette

Edwards, who received a bachelor of science degree in marketing, is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, Beta Gamma Sigma National Business Society, Alpha Lambda Delta and the marketing fraternity Pi Sigma Epsilon. She received the Kitty B. Strain Scholarship, a Foureaux Society Award and was a Phi Kappa Phi George Robertson awardee.

After graduation, Edwards plans to gain real-world experience before returning to school for a master's degree in business administration.

She is the daughter of Jimmie and Peggy Edwards and a graduate of St. Thomas More High School in Lafayette.

Jeffrey Michael Elder, Slidell

Elder, who received bachelor of science degree in zoology, is an LSU Alumni Society Top 100 Scholar and a three-year recipient of the Dean Arthur R. Choppin Memorial Honor Convocation Outstanding Academic Achievement in Biological Sciences Award. He is a member of the LSU Foureaux Society, Gamma Beta Phi, Alpha Epsilon Delta, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and the Golden Key National Honor Society.

He is the son of Greg and Shannon Elder and a graduate of Northshore High School in Slidell. He plans to attend LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.

Erika Ann Engel, Little Rock, Ark.

Engel, who received a bachelor of science degree in psychology, is a three-year recipient of the Baxter Allegiance Foundation Scholarship. She is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society. She graduated with college honors after receiving Sophomore Honors Distinction and completing an honors thesis. She is the daughter of Ben and Nancy Engel and a graduate of Mount St. Mary Academy in North Little Rock. Engel will begin a doctoral program in industrial and organizational psychology at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in the fall.

Dallas Meecham Fleming III, Lafayette

Fleming, who received a bachelor of science degree in microbiology and a bachelor of arts degree in Latin, won the M.D. Socolofsky award for excellence in microbiology and an honorable mention for his Latin scholarship. After graduation, Fleming will attend the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dallas M. Fleming Jr. of Lafayette and a graduate of Episcopal School of Acadiana at Cade.

Renesha Nicole Fountain, Cameron

Fountain, who received a bachelor of science degree in finance, is the daughter of Roy and Shirley Ellison and a graduate of South Cameron High School in Creole. After graduation, she plans to attend law school.

Kelly M. Fuqua, Sulphur

Fuqua, who received a bachelor of science degree in microbiology, was a recipient of the Phi Kappa Phi George Robertson Award and a Sophomore Honors Distinction Award. She also received an LSU Honors Scholarship, a TOPS Performance Scholarship and a Chancellor's Aid Scholarship. She was recognized at the Dean Arthur Choppin Memorial Honors Convocation. She is a member of the LSU Honors College, Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society, LSU Foureaux Society, Phi Kappa Phi, Golden Key National Honor Society, Alpha Epsilon Delta Medical Society and the LSU Affiliate of the American Cancer Society.

She is the daughter of Daniel and Deborah Winfree, the wife of Jason Fuqua and a graduate of Sulphur High School. Fuqua plans to attend LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.

Heidi Marie Gilchrist, Plaquemine

Gilchrist, who received a bachelor of science degree in microbiology, was a recipient of the Robert L. Amborski Award for Outstanding Senior in Microbiology and Sophomore Honors Distinction.

She has also received several scholarships including the LSU Alumni Association Top 100 Scholarship, Robert C. Byrd Scholarship, River West Medical Center Scholarship, Georgia Gulf Scholarship, Wal-Mart Scholarship, Teagle Foundation Scholarship and a Louisiana Delta Lions Club Scholarship.

She is a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta Premedical Honor Society, Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society and the Golden Key National Honor Society. She is the daughter of Ray and Sue Gilchrist and a graduate of Plaquemine High School. She plans to attend LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.

Ryan John Guitreau, Prairieville

Guitreau received a bachelor of science degree in engineering. He is the son of Richard and Lillian Guitreau and a graduate of St. Amant High School. After graduation he plans to work for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co. in Fort Worth, Texas.

Michael Benjamin Henderson, Baton Rouge

Henderson, who received a bachelor of science degree in poultry science and a bachelor of arts degree in political science, was named College of Agriculture Outstanding Graduating Senior for spring 2001 and the Honors College Outstanding Senior in 2000. He is also recipient of an LSU Honors Scholarship and was a Sternberg Award finalist. He is a member of student government, Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society, Leadership LSU 2000, Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honor Society and the LSU poultry judging team.

He is the son of David and Luana Henderson and a graduate of McKinley Senior High School. After graduation, Henderson plans to spend six months in Europe to write and then return to the United States for graduate school.

Chad Andrew Kennedy, Albany

Kennedy, who received a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering, is secretary of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He is the son of Ronald and Sally Kennedy and a graduate of Albany High School. After graduation, Kennedy will attend Stanford University on a fellowship for graduate studies in electrical engineering.

William Buck Kyle, Welsh

Kyle, who received both a bachelor of science in animal, dairy and poultry science and a bachelor of science in zoology, was the recipient of numerous scholarships including an LSU Honors Scholarship, a TOPS scholarship, Fritz-Lang Scholarship, Robert C. Byrd Scholarship, Charles Stewart Churchill Memorial Scholarship, George Fasting Agricultural Scholarship, 4-H County Agent's Scholarship and a 4-H Awards Scholarship.

He was also named the Outstanding Sophomore and, because of his hours, was twice named the Outstanding Senior in the College of Agriculture. He was a Phi Kappa Phi George Robertson awardee and is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, a Gold Member of Alpha Epsilon Delta Premedical Honor Society, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, Foureaux Society, Gamma Sigma Delta Agricultural Honor Society, Les Voyageurs, Phi Eta Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.

He is the son of Chip and Darlene Kyle and a graduate of Welsh High School. He plans to attend medical school.

Laci Ann LaFleur, Lake Charles

LaFleur, who received a bachelor of science degree in zoology, was a recipient of a Top Five Percent Honors Scholarship and a Chancellor's Leadership Scholarship. She is a member of the LSU Foureaux Society, Golden Key National Honor Society, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society and the Alpha Epsilon Delta Premedical society.

She is the daughter of Jay and Rosanna LaFleur and a graduate of Barbe High School in Lake Charles.

Qian Sherry Liang, Shanghai, China

Liang received a bachelor of science degree in accounting. After graduation she plans to work for a CPA firm and take the CPA exam. She is the daughter of Zhengzhong Liang and Ziaofeng Cai of Shanghai, China.

Maria Catherine Mahoney, Baton Rouge

Mahoney, who received a bachelor of arts degree in English, was named a Phi Kappa Phi George Robertson awardee, a College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Junior and was listed in Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities. She was also the recipient of a Bersuder History Scholarship and Sophomore Honors Distinction. She is the daughter of Richard and Pamela Mahoney and attended school at home. She plans to attend graduate school in Ireland and teach college in Arkansas.

Mary L. Martin, Zachary

Martin, who received a bachelor of science degree in microbiology, was a Dean Arthur R. Choppin Honoree and a Phi Kappa Phi George Robertson awardee. She has received a Tiger Athletic Foundation Scholarship, an LSU Honors Scholarship and a TOPS Scholarship. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, LSU Foureaux Society and Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society. She is the daughter of Howard and Rhonda Martin and a graduate of Zachary High School. After graduation she plans to attend LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.

Tara Elizabeth Montgomery, Doyline

Montgomery, who received a bachelor of arts degree in mass communication with a concentration in political communication, is a member of the LSU Foureaux Society, Chi Omega Sorority, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, Golden Key Honor Society and the Pre-law Society. She is a recipient of an LSU Honors Scholarship, a State of Louisiana Top Five Percent Scholarship and a TOPS scholarship, plus a $400 stipend.

She is the daughter of Hal and Linda Montgomery and a graduate of Glenbrook Academy in Doyline. She plans to study law at LSU's Paul M. Hebert Law Center.

Amanda Lenore Monus, Kingwood, Texas

Monus, who received a bachelor of science degree in petroleum engineering, was president of Pi Epsilon Tau, the petroleum engineering honor society. She is a member of the engineering society Tau Beta Pi, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society and Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society. She received the Senior Award from Phi Eta Sigma. She is an officer and active member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. She is an LSU honors scholarship winner and a member of the LSU Foureaux Society.

She is the daughter of Frederick and Cheryl Monus and a graduate of Kingwood High School. After graduation, Monus will work for ExxonMobil in Houston as a subsurface engineer.

Wai-Leong Mook, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Mook received a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. He is the son of Kam-Chin Mook and Lai Lin Tung of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and a graduate of Methodist Boys Secondary School. After graduation he will take a position with Michron Tech in Boise, Idaho.

Brianne Carol Musser, Slidell

Musser, who received bachelor of arts degrees in political science and international studies, is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society, Golden Key National Honor Society, Sigma Delta Pi Hispanic Honor Society, Political Science Honor Society, LSU Foureaux Society, Rotaract, Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society. She has received a 4.0 Award from Phi Eta Sigma. She has served as an LSU Ambassador and secretary of the Pre-Law Society. She is the daughter of Roger and Phyllis Musser and a graduate of Northshore High School in Slidell. She plans to attend Pontific Catholic University in Lima, Peru, for a semester, then return to the United States to pursue a master's degree in international relations.

Joyce Lynise Neal, Baton Rouge

Neal, who received a bachelor of arts degree in both English and history, was a three-time recipient of the W.E.B. DuBois Award from the Black Faculty and Staff Caucus. She was also a Phi Kappa Phi George Robertson awardee and Phi Kappa Phi's Senior of the Year for the Honors College of 2001. She received Sophomore Honors Distinction and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society, the LSU Foureaux Society, Mortar Board and Leadership LSU 2001.

She is the daughter of Fred A. Neal and Willie Mae Neal and a graduate of Baton Rouge Magnet High School. Neal plans to attend Emory Law School with a Woodruff Fellowship with the intention of practicing criminal law.

Hoe-Hin Ong, Penang, Malaysia

Ong received a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. He is a member of Golden Key National Honor Society, Eta Kappa Nu, LSU Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and the LSU Malaysian Student Government. He is the son of Ben-Jin Ong and Huy-Hwa Khor of Penang, and is a graduate of Chung Ling High School. Ong plans to attend graduate school at Mississippi State University.

Rebecca Jane Plauche,Covington

Plauche, who received a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering, is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Society of Women Engineers, Eta Kappa Nu--an electrical engineering honor society--and Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. She is a recipient of a Chancellor's Alumni Scholarship.

She is the daughter of Dwaine and Gail Plauche and a graduate of Covington High School. Plauche plans to work as an electrical engineer for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company.

James G. Prempeh, Sehua, Ghana

Prempeh, who received a bachelor of science degree in biochemistry, was named a Louisiana Alliance for Minority Participation Scholar and was also awarded the Dean Arthur R. Choppin Outstanding Student Award, the Black Staff Caucus Award for maintaining a 4.0 grade-point average and a History Certificate of Honor from Southern University. He received a Tiger Athletic Foundation Scholarship, a Southern University Systems Foundation Scholarship and an International Student scholarship.

Prempeh served as treasurer and social and financial organizer for the African Student Organization, club reporter for Alpha Epsilon Delta Premedical Honor Society and as care officer for the Baptist Student Union. He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. James Prempeh of Ghana and a graduate of Herman Gmeiner International College. He plans to attend Wake Forest Medical School in North Carolina.

Laurel Ann Riley, Metairie

Riley, who received a bachelor of science degree in zoology, was a recipient of a Meritorious Academic Achievement Award and was named the Annual Dean Arthur R. Choppin Memorial Honors Convocation Outstanding Scholar. She is a member of Sigma National Honors Society, the LSU Latin Club, Golden Key National Honors Society and the LSU Foureaux Society.

She is the daughter of Dr. James and Patty Riley and a graduate of Archbishop Chapelle High School. She plans to study medicine at LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.

Melissa Anne Romaire, Baton Rouge

Romaire, who received a bachelor of science degree in international trade and finance, is a recipient of an LSU Honors Scholarship, a Study Abroad Scholarship and TOPS Scholarship. She was named the Outstanding Macroeconomics Student for 2000-2001. She is the daughter of Robert and Terry Romaire and a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy.

Sonali Shayam Shah, Baton Rouge

Shah, who received a bachelor of science degree in accounting, is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society and is a Phi Kappa Phi George Robertson Awardee. She is the daughter of Shyam and Sandhya Shah and a graduate of Baton Rouge Magnet High School. After graduation, she plans to attend the master's degree program in accounting at LSU.

Brianne Annesia Smith, Baton Rouge

Smith, who received a bachelor of science degree in animal, dairy and poultry science, was named to the College of Agriculture and National Dean's Lists. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Gamma Sigma Delta and the LSU Foureaux Society. She was named a USAA All-American Collegiate Scholar and a Phi Kappa Phi George Robertson Awardee. She is the daughter of Brad and Annie Smith and a graduate of Parkview Baptist High School. After graduation, Smith will attend veterinary school.

Michael Edward Taylor, Slidell

Taylor, who received a bachelor of science degree in finance, was named Outstanding Junior in the College of Business. He has received an LSU Honors Scholarship, a TOPS Scholarship, a Louisiana High School Athletic Association Scholarship, a Knights of Columbus Scholarship and an Alpha Lambda Delta Sophomore Distinction Scholarship. He is a member of the LSU Foureaux Society, Golden Key Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, Alpha Lambda Delta National Honors Society and Beta Gamma Sigma.

He is the son of Robert Taylor III and Althea Taylor and a graduate of Northshore High School in Slidell. After graduation, he plans to work at ENRON, then attend an MBA program.

Lynn Thuy Tran, Harvey

Tran, who graduated in microbiology, received a TOPS Scholarship and a Tiger Athletic Foundation Scholarship. She is a member of the LSU Foureaux Society, Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society, Alpha Epsilon Delta, Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi. She has also received LSU Sophomore Honors Distinction and Residential Life Academic Achievement Award.

Tran is the daughter of Ha and Minh Tran and a graduate of Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts in Natchitoches. She plans to enter medical school after graduation.

Eric Paul Triche, Lafayette

Triche, who majored in elementary education, was president of the College of Education Student Council, president of Kappa Delta Epsilon, served on the board of directors of the Baton Rouge Jaycees, was a member of Omicron Kappa Delta, Mortar Board, Rotaract, Circle K and Leadership LSU 2001. He was named Outstanding Sophomore, Junior and Senior in the College of Education and Phi Kappa Phi Outstanding Junior and Senior in the College of Education. Triche is a member of Golden Key, Phi Kappa Phi, Gamma Beta Phi, Phi Eta Sigma and Alpha Lambda Delta honor societies and was recipient of both a Louisiana Top 5 Percent Scholarship and an LSU Honors Scholarship.

He plans to take a teaching position after graduation, later returning to grad school for a degree in educational administration with an eye to entering the political arena. His ultimate goal is to improve the school system through politics. He is the son of Kathy and Dean Triche of Lafayette.

Whitney Renee Whealdon,Carrollton, Texas

Whealdon, who received a bachelor of arts degree in English literature, is a member of Chi Omega Sorority, Campus Crusade for Christ, Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Society, Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Lambda Delta, Phi Eta Sigma National Freshman Honor Society and the Golden Key National Honor Society.

She is a member of the LSU Foureaux Society and is a recipient of the George Robertson Award through Phi Kappa Phi and has received a Tuition Exemption Scholarship and Chancellor's Student Aid Scholarship.

She is the daughter of Ed and Jana Whealdon and a graduate of Newman Smith High School. She plans to attend LSU graduate school in the Holmes Program for secondary education and later teach high school English in Louisiana.
