| BATON ROUGE – Virginia Grenier, executive director of the International Hospitality Foundation at LSU, has been honored by the National Association of International Educators, or NAFSA, with the Hugh M. Jenkins Award for excellence in community programming. The award was announced at the NAFSA annual conference in Los Angeles during the Knowledge Community-ISSS Update Meeting on May 26. Grenier has worked with the foundation for 25 years, helping link the greater Baton Rouge community with LSU international students. The foundation works by helping to welcome international students and providing an orientation to the city of Baton Rouge, as well as linking them with friendship hosts in the community. “I am honored to have been nominated and to receive NAFSA’s Hugh Jenkins award,” said Grenier. “It is an honor that I share with our many volunteers and with the outstanding international students who come to study at LSU. Promoting friendship and intercultural understanding between the Baton Rouge community and students from all over the world has been a great pleasure for me for 25 years.” According to NAFSA, the Hugh M. Jenkins Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to promoting global understanding and international exchange in the local community. Specifically, it honors people who exemplify a spirit of volunteerism and a long-term dedication to international exchange. The award identifies individuals whose leadership encompasses outstanding skills in recruiting, training, and recognizing community volunteers. It is also intended to reward personal involvement with international students in the local community. “The award committee was extremely impressed with the work (Virginia) has done over the years to bring the Baton Rouge community together with international students at Louisiana State University,” said Jane Dunham, chair of the award committee. “Her leadership in recruiting and training other volunteers show the long-term commitment she has to promoting global understanding.” - 30 - |
