| BATON ROUGE – The LSU Speech and Debate Team won the Louisiana segment of the Tri-State Championship competition this past weekend at the Louisiana Intercollegiate Forensics Association Tri-State Championship/Eddy Shell Invitational tournament in Bossier City. “I am so proud of our teams’ performances. Our students and coaching staff have worked extremely hard to prepare for stiff competition, and I am glad to say it’s paying off. They certainly deserve this recognition for their work,” said Mike Applin, director of speech and debate in the LSU Department of Communication Studies. LSU’s two debate teams, Chris Cummings/Stephen Chandler and Dani Borel/Kevin Garner, took top honors in both the Louisiana and overall tournament NPDA Debate competition. Cummings won the state championship in Extemporaneous Speaking and was the Top Speaker in NPDA Debate. Jessica Engler won state championships in After Dinner Speaking and Informative Speaking. Ashley Lopez took the state championship in Poetry Interpretation, and she and Lance Bordelon were the state champions in Dramatic Duo Interpretation. In the Eddy Shell Invitational tournament, LSU won first place in NPDA Debate, second place in the overall tournament and third place in Individual Events. In addition to Cummings’ award as Top Speaker in NPDA Debate, Dani Borel won second place, Stephen Chandler won fourth place and Kevin Garner won fifth place in that category. Cummings also won sixth place in Impromptu Speaking. Engler won fourth place in Extemporaneous Speaking and third place in Informative Speaking. Borel won fourth place in Informative Speaking. Lopez won fourth place in Poetry Interpretation and seventh place in Prose Interpretation. She and Bordelon won third place in Dramatic Duo Interpretation. In addition to Engler’s first place in After Dinner Speaking, Ben Dubroc won second place in that category and Garner won fourth place. “I’m impressed that even with our limited resources, these students have continued to represent LSU beautifully and further our university’s reputation as a top tier institution,” Applin said. The team will be next hosting the annual LSU Mardi Gras Classic tournament Feb. 13-15. -30- |
