LSU Continuing Education to Host LEGO Robotics Camp for Middle and High School Students

07/09/2009 08:29 AM
BATON ROUGE – Students in grades 7-12 can sign up for the second session of LSU Continuing Education’s Lego Robotics Camp, which will run from July 20-23.

This is the final session of the camp, which teaches students how to design, construct and program robots using the LEGO MINDSTORMS.NXT software.

Students participating in the camp have the freedom to design several robots of their choice, and are encouraged to use their interests to build anything they desire. Students choose to build animals including cats, dogs or dolphins, while others prefer to build robots that perform physical functions such as kicking a ball.

The camp also features discussions on the history of robots and important influential figures such as science fiction writer Isaac Asimov. Later in the camp, students learn how to build robots that can communicate with each other and even have a SumoBot competition.

The camp is one of the many summer enrichment programs hosted by LSU Continuing Education. Another camp still available for registration is Camp Challenge, which will have sessions July 13-17 and July 20-24. Camp Challenge features courses are designed to provide a rich learning environment for academically talented grade students in from kindergarten to the sixth grade. Courses introduce curriculum concepts and then explore specific topics at a level not commonly achieved in the regular classroom environment. Children can participate in exciting learning experiences with similarly motivated peers and skilled teachers. Instructors are selected based upon their educational backgrounds, certifications, teaching experience and expertise in their field.
