LSU Continuing Education to Host Crime Scene Science Camp for Kids

06/09/2009 01:20 PM
BATON ROUGE – Students in grades 7-12 will have a chance to learn about the science involved in crime scene investigations thanks to one of many summer enrichment pre-college programs hosted by LSU Continuing Education.

The Basic Forensic Science Camp introduces students to a wide range of skills commonly used by crime scene investigators and laboratory specialists. Two sessions of the camp will be held this summer: June 22-26 and July 20-24.

Forensic science campers will participate in mock crime scenes, interview suspects, use scientific skills to search for clues and learn how to collaborate with others in attempt to solve a crime.

Students participating in the camp will also have hands-on experience in crime scene investigation topics such as facial reconstruction, bone identification and document and fingerprint analysis.

“The forensic science camp gives students a chance to learn about a topic not normally studied in the everyday classroom,” said Joshua Callegan, pre-college coordinator at LSU Continuing Education. “It is a unique, fun and interesting camp but educational at the same time.”

The camp is held on the LSU campus and students will learn about the LSU Forensic Anthropology and Computer Enhancement Services Laboratory.

For more information about the Basic Forensic Science Camp, contact Joshua Callegan at jcallegan@outreach.lsu.edu. Students and parents can also register on LSU Continuing Education’s Web site at www.outreach.lsu.edu/Pre-College or call 225-578-2500.
